Changing Seat Belts (TA22)

Hey guys,
Well after being on hold to Dept Transport for too long I thought I'd post here:)
I have a 74 TA22 that has the old lap sash seat belts which I was wanting to change over to retractables from the 75 and on celicas. So I removed the retractables from the parts car, but the drivers mechanism is well and truly buggered. So I am wanting to know if there are any insurance/legal problems with say getting some belt mechanisms from other cars and fitting to the plat and bolting them up to my beast.
Oh and any suggestions on which makes models I could easily grab them from. Got a friend with a pile of XA-XF falcon bits laying around etc.
OR where to buy new sets from in Brissy.
Thanks guys
Floppy

Just guessing here, but I'd say you're fine provided (a) the parts you use are no older than your car and (b) you don't modify anything to make it work. That probably means you'll have to use Toyota parts.
Guesses don't help you much though; you should go and have a chat with an engineer. The Dept of Transport is hopeless for queries like this, don't waste your time with them!

By law if you fit different seat belts into your car they have to be brand spankin new.

Ahh ok.
So my next question would be, where do you actually buy new seatbelt gear from? Toyota. Or can you get them through other places as well?
I dont mind having to put new ones in, safety is more important than saving a few bucks.
Thanks guys
(PS lost this thread lol and had to do a search to find my own posting)

i've seen new seat belt hardware at autobarn (woodridge/springwood way) ...
was a bit pricey i think (actual price eludes me).
to get my car registered, i used the belts out of similar car from wreckers - get entire harness so it's all had the same wear-n-tear - and dont use at all if wreck has been in accident.

Yeah, I have another celica I was trying to use the retractables out of. The drivers side was buggered.
The ones in the car now are ok, just hate how the hang back so far. Might give autobarn a ring today and see how much they go for.
Retractables make it so much nicer.

Thanks for all the info guys.

yeah when I used to do compliance on imported vehicles, all the seatbelts had to be replaced with brand new ones, no matter what their condition.

I actually replaced my front ones with ones from a ke 55 Coupe with no problems, so don't just look at celicas. Otherwise check out aftermarket they will make something to fit.
As for repairing existing ones is technically illegal to do anything to them once buggered thay are supposed to be replaced.

Nah I dont want to much around with repairing the original retractables. Not worth the risk.
I have the plate that bolts to the chassis so I imagine its just a matter of getting a set that will bolt to this plate and the piece the buckle clips into.
I did notice last weekend at ABC Oxley up here that most of the drivers seat belts were cut. Due to accidents etc so that people cant re-use them.
