Slotted rotor direction Mon, 13 September 2004 22:19 Go to next message
Which way should the slots in my rotors go. Should they go from the inside towards the back of the car or from the inside fowards? I have checked out a few different cars and there seems to be no definate answer? Does it matter?

Brad

DBA's run inside backwards.
My TRD ones are supposed to run inside forwards, but I've turned them around because the air couldn't escape on the inside due to the repositioning of my calipers.

Now I bet I've got you completely confused!

is it worth having rotors slotted? does it make a noticeable diff?

Cheers

The point of slotting is to give any air that could be trapped between the pads & the disc somewhere to escape to.
This was the original theory behind cross drilling, but this creates a weak path across the disc.

The edge of the slot also helps to scrape any foreign material off the pad.

I haven't been able to tell as I've never gone from a non-slotted to a slotted of the same size. I've upgrading the calipers & disc size at the same time, so not a level field to compare on.

It's unlikely you'll notice the difference unless you're giving your brakes a really hard time, ie circuit racing or a "spirited" blat through the mountains. Having said that, if you're buying new rotors it's usually only a few bucks extra to get the slotted versions, so why not?

My DBA slotted said to fit so that the slots went one way, but I have seen cars on the road (HSV with premium brakes is the only particular model which sticks in my memory) with the slots heading the other way.

My conclusion: it doesn't matter at all.

Slots don't necessarily dictate the direction of rotor travel - ie on vented rotors, the cooling vanes dictate which way the rotor should spin to assist cooling ; different rotor manufacturers have the slots running different ways for different reasons - always check the manufacturer's recommendation.

I thought that the idea behind slots and drilling is for when you get brake fade. Correct me if im wrong as i always seem to be, but this is the temperature at which the glue binding brake pad material together turns into gas. this gas forms a layer between rotor surface and pad therefore lubricating. we all have had that feeling of 'oh s**t' when we first got our licenses.

These grooves give the gases an escape route so pad can once again create friction with disc. This is what qualifies a quality brake pad from a supercheap brake pad, the temperature at which the glue sublimates. This heat problem runs into the brake fluid also doesnt it? high temp/non boil/dot 5 whatever fluid?

Its what I thought anyway Confused

The other main reason for slots (probly the biggest) is for disssipation of brake pad dust...

Supralux, thats basicaly what the BDA dude told me at a training night. except he said the slots where mainly to 'wipe' the pad clean more than get rid of the gasses (which was the cross drilled holes job).
their new 'Kangaroo paw' internal cooling design looks rather trick, is spose to help cooling of the rotor much better than the old vane type.
and the new 2 part rotors with aluminium hat are very nice indeed. Wink

Although i have heard nasty things about the hats stress fracturing on the 2piece DBA ones.
