conversions and rego? Mon, 23 September 2002 12:07 Go to next message
hey guys, I just did a 4age (86kw) into ae86 conversion, and rego isnt till februrary. I know there are quite a few others who have done this on here, have you had any problems with rego. Did you need to get your plate stamped or anything?

Im assuming that, because there is no major mods such as engine mounts or doubling the horsepower that there are no major problems. Anyway, it is basically the same block, just diferent head.

SO...any problems?

Thanks
Adam

Although your rego isn't due til February, you're probably now "unregistered" in the bureaucratic sense. That is, your (new) engine number doesn't match the one shown on your rego papers.

Ditto for insurance (?)

and tell your insurance company
they will do anything at all to get out of paying you if you have a crash, so make sure everything is stated

Hey sorry but also on this topic, I have a 1977 ra28 which i plan to convert to 18r-geu and i live in SA, what are everyones experiences with this? i really need some facts to show that it isnt too difficult and to convince my dad i wont get defected. My engine plate says 18Rc as they do. I will ring up the transport department or rego office and see what they say but does anyone here live in sa and own a Twin Cam pre-80's celica and know what the issues are with getting new engine plates or getting it regoe'd/insured with the new engine? are either of them bastards? (i know this is a stupid question.) do u NEED an engineers certificate? (i think i know the answer to this one.)
Also what typically would u require apart from a clean swap and no rust or defects, as far as add-ons, to pass an engineers cert. inspection with this extra power? as it is not an increase in capacity at all and no turbo, just a later model engine of the same family.
A bit of light on this subject from anyone in the know would be greatly appreciated, especially if your from south oz.

Cheers again

yes, you will definitly need an engineer's cert.
as for other mods.. depends on what engineer you go to. A strict one might want some bigger brakes on it to match the extra power, but tehre are almost certainly some around who's let it through with no other mods.
