Okay, as stated in another thread, I'm going to advance the timing and change the plugs in my 21R-C to take advantage of the fact I'm using 98RON fuel always instead of 89RON which its designed to cope with.

I've been told that I should go one range colder, can someone explain this?

Also, what brand of spark plug do people recommend? I was thinking about looking at the Iridium plugs by NGK or Denso. What does everyone recommend?

Generally a change to a colder plug is done to aviod detonation from increased compression, advancing timing(Combustion chamber hotter) or if evidence of overheating of the plug is apparent(usually caused by continuios high speed operation),just as a hotter plug is recommended in worn engines to avoid oil/carbon fouling.
When you remove a spark plug, what does the end look like? What colour is it? Does the ceremic look bleached/blistered?.
I have always had exceptional results from the NGK V groove range of plugs, the only brand (apart from Golden Lodge,N.L.A.) that has never let me down with dud plugs or premature failure.

You Can't beat the performance vs cost of a good old fasioned steel plug.

Platinum plugs simply do not perform as well!!

What do you think King_J runs in his 600+ HP techno-beast.

So what you recommend? Do I go colder because I'll be advancing the timing?

Mind you, going one colder will only mean I'd use the same heat range as the 5ME. And thats still pretty hot.

Answer
Need to know what plug you are using now and what it looks like when removed from engine.

2.

Answer
MAY need to go colder, may not. It depends on your answer to 1.

Ok, I'll check how the plugs are now, if fine, advance the timing, then give it a little bit to see how they go...

I'll get the same heat range or a slightly colder one based on how the car reacts.

Thanks for the info.
