Toyota 4 cylinders

Ok folks, I'm throwing up ideas here. Was offered a mk1 cortina at a good price, so it might be purchased some time soon. I thought that if I got it at the right price, I'd have some bling bling cash money left over, so maybe an engine swap might be in order? Now, the car already has a 2l pinto in it (500cc's up on the orriginal engine, with an overhead camshaft to boot) but I'm afraid that just won't cut it, so I thought to myself "what would fit under that tinly little bonnet" for those of you wondering just how tiny, an example is here:

I thought that a cosworth engine would be nice, but hella expensive, nissan? no thank you, toyota? that would be nice!
Questions: I don't really want to go under 2l, but 3sgte's are expensive, should I go 4agze? or something else? what gearboxes are used with these engines (they are fwd arn't they?)? costs? availability? workability? etc.
cheers

Save your money Pal !
Just go and buy a real Toyota. Not a clapped out POS from Ford.

I'm afraid that this "clapped out pos from ford" will suit me a lot better than my current clapped out pos from toyota. Don't get me wrong, I like toyotas, my first race car was a mighty corolla, but I'm cortina crazy now

I seem to recall seeing a MK1 corty with a FJ20 sitting under that little bonnet in a Fast Fours magazine a few years ago. If you can fit a whopping big FJ20 head under the bonnet, then your choice of 4 cylinder engines should be pretty extensive.
I will see if I can find the magazine in my collection.

Well now, what about a 18RG? They're reasonably cheap, parts are 'fairly' common, and they are a pretty powerful NA motor. They love to Rev and they look good, with a functional and clean lay-out. what more do u want?
ohh, and they're RWD, and gearboxs are common to.
thanks
Ben
*me only says this cause me has one*

arn't they the older 8v twin cam? I don't think I'd bother with an older engine like that, probobly just stick with the pinto (which is a pretty sturdy na motor). I was thinking of a forced engine of some sort, which is why the 3sgte and 4agze popped into mind.

Well a few peoples have put 4AG's into cortina's/escorts with good success. They're cheap, small enough to fit and pretty light too. Personally I wouldn't go past it if you want something tidy that will fit without having to belt things around too much.

I saw one in my mates workshop with a small block chev. A shame..
Saw another mk1 as a fake Lotus Cortina. They did use a Toyota twin cam (much cheaper than the real thing) and ground of the Toyota writing on the covers. I can't remember if it was a RG or TG, but it looked convincing at first glance.
I like most cars that have a Bathurst heritage (maybe not the Vauxhall Viva..) including my Triumph 2500, BMW E30, and of course AE82!!

Depends on how much you want to spend. I would go a beams 3S and maybe the 6-spd for it (cash dependant).
