FWD driving Mon, 23 September 2002 14:19 Go to next message
ok, I need any tips out there on driving a front wheel drive car.
anything at all.. cornering differences between it and a RWD specifically. How the techniques differ, anything that might help.

I have a try-out for a racing team coming up, but the team races FWD, and I've never driven a FWD car in anything even resembling a race situation.
and if anyone out there feels like taking me for a drive and showing me the ropes, I'd be in your debt (more on how I got this offer to join the racing team to come, in war stories)

One of the best things to remember in a FWD (IMHO) is 'point and shoot'. Basicly point the front wheels where you want them to go, and step on the accelerator!

You will notice a fair bit of lift off over steer, and tourqe steer as well. The tourqe steer you will probably adapt to quickly.

One habit that is hard to break is power drifting the back end! You can however, get the back end to step out on command useing left foot breaking, but i assume you are racing on a track, so its not really needed Smile

Have fun, and i hope the trial goes well!

Craig.

If you are a great driver which is why you are doing this test drive then you should be able to adapt to FWD very quickly, not a huge difference between FWD and RWD on a track so you should get it quickly if your a good driver the big difference between FWD and RWD is when you hit the dirt.

thats where the real driving begins Very Happy

i was taught the differences are in FR driving you have to hard brake and accel in straight lines (before and after corners) whereas in FF you charge towards the corner and brake AS you turn, putting more weight on the front wheels so they dont slip. but i could be wrong having never raced competitivly

Yup, brake later and deeper into turns. Just remember that more throttle will induce understeer instead of oversteer...

So basically, if you find yourself halfway into a corner and the front end is losing grip, instead of adding more accelerator, do a bit of left foot braking. Try to avoid lifting off, learn to left foot brake instead, that way you keep the revs up and stay in the power band.

It's a LOT harder to screw up in a FWD, but also a lot more difficult to get right, especially if you screw up the entry. Concentrate on the entry, 'coz the exit is just a point and shoot exercise.

Also, have a look at some books/sites on racing lines. The FWD racing line is different, you turn in later than in a RWD.
