Painting rubber/seals? Wed, 15 September 2004 08:46 Go to next message
Hi, my cars due to come back from its spray job any time.. now everything on it looks brand new bar the rubbers(mainly talking about my black window trims etc) which of course look 20 years old and no ammount of armorall or anything is changing that.
so im looking for a way to freshen them all up to a nice matt black and was thinking about painting them.
Is there any specific paint to be used on rubber and will it work without cracking?.
what sort of prep would i need?

i dont know if it can/should be done.. but would like to know and couldnt find anything in search or on google

I recommend using the VHT vinyl dye, works a treat at making old rubbers looking new.

dude

you will really lose the sealability of the rubber if you do this.

have you tried a nice high-quality silicone-spray. I have some here.. wait.. where are you???

anyway.. that is what I would try first.. it even makes uber gray old rubber look (and work) nice

The vinyl dye will make it look black, without losing any of the flexibility.

No idea to seal it, the can is like $10-15 from memory, or I could be thinking about something else.

It'll work on plastic provided it's cleaned well. I wouldn't be doing it on the car though, take it off for peace of mind.

i use a meguiars spray thing (its red) that i think is called 'vinyl rejuvinator' - very good stuff, makes old rubbers look new (so long as they are in reasonable condition)... about $14 if i recall correctly

if it works on my 35 year old vent window rubbers it will work on your car Wink
