Excessive Engine Bay Temps

Hey guys...
I've got a cooling issue with my ute...
Its got a set of extractors that basically wrap around the starter...
i've noticed when doing a bit of circle work that the heat of the extractors is devastating !!
Just last week it melted my clutch cable that is a good 200mm away !
I'm thinking about getting some heat wrap for the extractors as a tempory fix until i change the head which will need new pipes...
Will this stuff stand upto the abuse of this kind of heat ? I get the impression its more for normal driving, not dyno runs and burnouts....
I know the HPC coating is the way to go, but my extractors are pretty crap and will be replaced within 12 months...
thanks,
Cam

My experience with wrap is that its a PITA, often comes unraveled after about 6 months, dosent like getting wet at all, and is not nearly as good as HPC.. commit to the new pipes and hpc dont waste time effort and money on wrap.

SSV have a lil scoop about 10cm x 120cm and about 2cm tall it sits just infront of your wiper water jets and the whole faces the windscreen... it creates a negative presure at the opening and extracts heat sells for 80 bucks... i'm looking at putting one on the cressi before i paint the lil bitch

Is it normal for your extractors to be getting hot enough to melt something 20cm away? Maybe your timing is too retarded (for example) which is creating excessive exhaust temperatures...

I think a scoop would be useless, as you need to be moving to create air flow !
Timing: Not to sure, i'll play with it after i put in the HEI unit...
And no, i dont think it is normal to melt things 20cm away from your extractors
also forgot to mention, new extracors will be coming with a new head... or is that the other way around ??
maybe a heat shield is my best defence against heat damage ??
At least it'd protect the starter !

Yes, a strategically-placed heat shield can work wonders. It's worth a try anyway.

You just leave my baby alone Lucas!
I've got some thermal wrap left in the shed somewhere, if I find it, I'll through it your way!

i've got some heat wrap around the last three pipes on the 4m it works well you can touch the pipes not long after thrashing it, where as i touched the other 3 and burnt fuck out of my fingers
i cooked the seals in the steering box it cost me $500 to get it recond
maybe you can wrap some of the heat stuff around the starter?

I had the same problem in my Hq Monaro in the burnout comps it would cook the starter motor wiring. Send your extractors to Jethot or HPC. That solved the problem for me...I also made some heat shield out of aluminium and bolted it around the starter.
