Am finding it dificult to find out what SUPRA Models Toyota actually sold in Australia. Am particularly interested in the 1JZA70 which is available in Japan and I dont believe sold in Australia at all.
Thanks

No, neither the JZA70 or the GA70 or the more recent JZA80 Supras were sold in Oz. The Only Supras sold in Oz were the MA61, MA70 and MA71.

The JZA70 was only sold as a "grey" import (second hand Jap car).

Thanks I appreciate the input.
Just for the record.
Toyota Australia have confirmed they sold only MA70/71 Models in Australia until 1992.
I believe that after 1990 all Australian sales may have been from a "stockpile" as MA70/71 production seems to have stopped in Japan with introduction of the JZA70 in 1990. Still trying to confirm this.

Yeah, the MA70 ceased production in Japan in 1990, turbo model only. The 7m-ge version continued as far as I'm aware.

I didn't think they were - but Extreme Machines in Willetton WA have a JZA70 in stock that they swear is an original Australian Compliance car. They say that it is one of a few (how few?) that were bought out to test the market but at $70K plus were just too expensive to sell.
I you are interested their phone number is 08 9457 2288

Word on the street is 15 JZA70's came into aus by toyota.
A $70K+ price tag killed the supra range.

I read somewhere that Toyota didn't want the 1JZ as opposed to the 7M due to the perceived "lack" of a 2.5 engine compared to the 3.0 litre engine, and didn't import them (even though the 1J was more powerful at the time).

Seen a few MA6* compliance plates on jza70's.
Not that there's any bodgy grey imports in the country.

Thanks everyone
Toyota Aust advised they didnt sell any, but it seems they may have brought in several "test" JZA70 vehicles? Point is it wasnt sold in Asutralia as a Toyota Model and should be available under SEVS as an import. Am lookig closer at it

Well, it WAS available under the old scheme. As were the GT Limiteds. Now with the new scheme the mk3 just isn't eligible anymore. I'm not sure whether anyone has applied for plates under the new rules. I would assume the couple of importers in WA would have, and would have been knocked back.
I'm not sure why the jza70 wouldn't be eligible. Maybe because the body shape was available here new, not sure.

Same body shape = not different enough
Same argument for the Hilux => Surf
I guess only a few more years to the 15 year rule, or buy a TT Soarer (the "round Supra")

That's right - the JZA70 is considered under the new rules as an engine variant of the MA70 and, because the MA70 was sold in Australia, is not eligible to be imported. Both Kevin Hart from Melville Importers and someone from Extreme Machines (the 2 WA importers who used to import Mark 3 supras) have confirmed this.
If you want a JZA70 there are quite a few going around in WA that were imported by Kevin Hart under the old rules. Including some Type R's - these have Recaro seats and Bilstein shocks. But Perth is probably too far from Goulbourn to make that practical.
Cheers, Sam
