Auto gearbox in MX 83 Tue, 24 September 2002 10:40 Go to next message
Hi,
First, I would like to thank all of you for all advices regarding my Cressida.
Now I have a problem with auto box.
This box is electronically controlled, but I have no info about codes etc. I heard that gearbox codes can be read in the same fashion as engine codes but I have no manual.
On neutral and park I can hear sort of grinding/wheezing noise.
This happens only after driving, when box is hot.
Box works OK but on low throttle is sometimes hunting and changes are not particularly smooth.
Anybody knows what model is this box?

Question
Is the box dying?
T. fluid replaced according to granddad service record 5k ago.
Is the same type gearbox used in other Toyotas so I can look at the manual?
What kind of manual transmission can be fit and if it makes sense?
Regards
Greg

Transmission is the A340E, which is relatively common in a number of Toyotas (The Soarer, for example). Naturally, there are differences in case size etc, but the "innards" are similar.
One thing these transmissions like is being cool so it's always a good idea to fit an aftermarket transmission cooler (which I will be doing to my own car as it nears road-readiness).

As for your noises, I would not be encouraged; however you should probably get a specialist to check it over...

1. ignition on (dont start motor)
2. o/d switch on
3. connect terminals TE1 and E1 on check connector
4. read codes on o/d light

system normal - light will bling 2 times per second

errors:
42 - #1 speed sensor
61 - #2 speed sensor
62 - #1 solenoid faulty or disconnected
63 - #2 solenoid faulty or disconnected
64 - lock up solenoid faulty or disconnected

this will only give electrical faults - funny noises should be checked by a transmission specialist
