my temp guage goes all the way to the top blank then there is a white then a red line right next to each other
so about 5-6mm from the top of the guage

Hi,
My 18RG runs a fraction under 80 Degrees Cels. It goes a little over the 80 mark then the thermostat opens and she drops down.
If it's really hot and I'm running the air con, then it goes a little over 80.

You already have your thermostat out so just replace it with a new one.
You can do a very basic tune yourself by buying one of those cheap vac guages from supercrap auto and matching the carbies but a proper tune should be done by a professional on a set of rollers/dyno.

i've got a shop manual for the 18R-G..the diagram shows a dual vaccume gauge (just buy 2 cheap ones i guess) and it t-pieces off to both barrels before the balance tube..so you tune each carb, not each barrel..i'll have a look at it tonite to make sure..also if anyone wants a copy of this (enough info to rebuild the motor) just ask
