i have an oil leak from my car it is dripping from around the front of the bellshousing and a little at the back of the gearbox,

the oil does not smell like gearbox oil thought.

When i recoed my engine i did not replcae the rear main seal and suspect that is my problem but could the oil make its way to the back of the gearbox?

or any othere ideas thanks.

I find it unlikely engine oil could find its way to the back of the gearbox. More likely the rear main seal has let go and the gearbox end seal is on its way out also.

Slow leak from the rear main seal could be blown along the bottom of the gearbox with the force of the air as the car is driven along - when it gets to the end there is nowhere further for it to go so it accumulates and drips.

How hard is this seal in the gearbox to replace and cost?
