Opinions on car choice?? Wagon! Sun, 19 September 2004 11:34 Go to next message
Ok. My brother is still on his Ls and we have all manual cars at home. I think he wants to get his license on an auto first.

Looking at a car for about 2-2.5k with rego.
Considering a

88 camry wagon
or mid 80s corona wagon
or around 84-85 model camry hatchback (we've had one previously)
or corolla wagon (those 4wd ones)

Are the auto boxes in all these pretty robust? Need a car that can chuck a board in the back, not give a sht about and pull to bits and fix if necessary with cheap parts.

I suppose injected would be better, I guess I'll just have to keep an eye out in the trading post.

Any opinions appreciated!

the 88 camry will probabaly be the most relicable of the lot - and most user friendly/modern ..

the corona - being RWD might be a bit more friendly to control in the wet - less front understeer tendancies if he keeps off the go pedal ..

both are plentiful in parts - especially the camry

the others - i wouldnt worry about.. ( personal oppinon )

Thanks mate. Just checking camry prices on tpost then. Can get a late 80s for around 1.5k to 2.5k So I'm guessing 2.5k would buy a half decent one. They look pretty crap - but a lot of car for the money. Corona might be easier to work on (RWD) but as you said the camry is a bit more modern.

Should be good Smile
Will keep an eye out in the local paper etc for a bargain.
Would be good for me to borrow also. A s/wagon can come in handy

Personal opinion, and old " Crown " wagon Very Happy

Just kidding. I would go the corona, just incase the front CV joints go on the camry. Bastard to fix ya self, so i have been told.

I wouldn't say a corona is safer in the wet, understeer is far more controllable than oversteer. My corona has stepped out many times in the wet without provacation.

I want my brother to have my ae82 twin cam, except he wants an auto for his first car. My ae82 is in perfect nick and I know it back to front - will be sad to let it go when I upgrade soonish.

Would also rather a wagon if possible. Oh and CV joints are really cheap nowadays adrij. They just give you an exchange shaft so you dont have to stuff around much - probably 100-200 bucks per shaft I'd say. As long as you keep the boots free from splits, CV joints on toyotas seem to last almost forever Smile

Thanks guys!!
