pulling apart a hilux axle Sun, 19 September 2004 23:44 Go to next message
well i went to the wreckers on the weekend and managed to grab a housing and some axles from a hilux.
getting the housing out was not an issue but i am confused as to how you separate the drums from the axles, is there a special trick to it.
i don't have any pictures at the moment but i figured if someone had an exploded view of one or knew how they did it themselves when they did it, that they could tell me what i am missing.
i saw a circlip on the shaft side that i tried to get off (and failed miserably...is there a trick to these things). is this the key to it all coming apart?

You need to use a press to remove the backing plates for the drum brakes.

You use a grinder.

What Clint said. A 20 tonne press works a treat.
