What is this turbo, any good? Mon, 20 September 2004 09:04 Go to next message
Ok well i'm not really into turbo's so i don't know the difference between them all and what the numbers mean but does anyone know if this one is any good or how much it would be worth.

Its a Garrett turbo off a Mercedes Benz E-class 270 CDI

It is a variable vane turbo and the vanes a controlled by an electronic actuator which is fixed to the turbo.

on the intake it says .53
and on the exhaust it says .64

it also has B18J2 written on it, also has the Mercedes Part number ect but that would be of no use to anyone.

so how much could i sell this puppy for?

google would help? tried putting the part number into it?

... any turbo with varable nozzles in the exhaust side should be of interest.

go to <www.egarrett.com/> (who have obviously been bought out by Honeywell) to learn more.

my understanding is that this 'variable vane' technology makes turbos very usable over a wide engine speed and power-output range.

well the variable vane just helps maintain the set boost pressure, it doesn't just dump the exhaust around the turbine to reduce boost pressure in these it just changes the angle in which the exhaust hits the exhaust turbine there for it is at peak boos pressure most of the time.

Does it look anything like this?

http://toyotacover.50megs.com/Turbo/GT20_2.jpg

I bought this turbo recently.
This turbo is from 2003 Opel Omega 2.5TDS. This Opel has license made BMW engine in it. So the same turbo can be found from new BMW 525TDi also.

Sounds like the MB turbo is upper grade with electronic actuator. Have you thought how are you going to control the electronics? Does it have waste gate?

I paid 200¤ (~350AUD) for my turbo. It has done only 9000km, so it's a virtually brand new. Only slight oxide on actuator as you can see Smile . Test bench for this turbo will be 18R-GTE Cool .

BTW. I have a short GIF animation of the variable vanes. I you want it I can Email it. It's 550kb.

i'll start the bidding at $100 so i can fit it to my povo 4K Very Happy
the main issue i've heard with the VNT's is that they tend to carbon up when they are not used much...

so the moral of the story is, regularly give it heaps so you work the vanes Smile

that animated Gif is prety neat!
