Cool Steve,
I have a late model T-18 that I hope to do similar things with. The engines are getting pretty rare though and are a bit pricey. It was interesting to know that ND Australia made the computers. The GT engines were never released in Oz though?
With your scans, the effect you see is called Moire effect and happens because of the line ruling used to reproduce newspaper images interferes with the scanning dpi. There is usually a "descree" function on most scanning software.
Go the old school!

Sorry my error, ND sent me the new computer, but it came from Japan. I had to get the engine going on an old 2TGTE black box I got from Footscray wrecking yard for $50, also bought a 1GT computer and it ran as well. I should do an RTA search to see where CBL237 is these days. The engine was less than 1 year old in 1984 and ran really strongly. It revved past 7000 and you really had to watch that turbo kick in. I didn't do the sophisticated things they do today like larger wheels, or a disc brake rear. With 13inch roller skates and TA's it went over 160 with 1000 rpm to go, we put four bods in it and it still went over 160. Lethal, in 1985, I sold it to a pin ball technician from Warrnambool who lived in Geelong, I hear his wife did a couple of 360's in the wet on the Geelong Road running on the TA's gasp shock, it had grunt and it could out accelerate a Group A SS Commodore VK, as I tried it one meet at Sandown with the HDT owners secretaries Blue GA.. I mean just think what was on the road back then?? As to why I made it I don't know, bored I guess. All had to do was front the RTA and they put the new engine number 3T900 something in the computer in place of the 3TC number, no certification in those days.. The best thing about Jap performance stuff in those days is none of the Ford/GMH petrol heads knew what hit them when you pulled alongs side doing 160 KPH and changed up to 5th gear!!!LOL

Steve,
one of the wreckers claim to have a low km 'just out of the container' engine in stock $1500 no electrics. Maybe you should get another project going? I know what the 'first car' syndrome is like - nostalgia and all.
The T18's appear lethal in another respect and that is the long door/poor side intrusion and skimpy pillar placed way back. A roll cage is definitely on the wish list.
Did the beast have a W50 gearbox and same clutch as the 3T-C's?
My 3T-C's diff is on the way out. I drive hard but it doesn't have that much grunt - didn't expect to do the diff!
Most people now are putting in expensive forged pistons and are able to run more agressive turbo's $$$$
I am hoping to get a 3T-GTEU but use my current block so as to avoid having to declare to RTA (fair bit of stuffing around) - don't know if this is legal tho
Any more pics?

Re 3TGTE 1984 Project car. As I remember the motor and gear box were complete and I never seperated them, as there was less than 8000 kM on the motor and it didnt seem necessary. I will try to despeckle the photos, but they have been lifted from the old magazine article in Turbo Australia 1985 so are only black and white. I used the original diff as the previous 3TC and box was turbo charged (after market) I still have that engine and box free to a good home..The 3TGTE project had no electrics either so the journey to get it going was the buzz, driving it afterwards was a bummer, as you said a side crash and man it was all over, no side intrusion of any sort. I think the gear box was ex TT142 so what does that make it? A W55GT from the RT/GT-T Corona series? I used two piece tail shaft and can't remember whether that was standard in the T18 or no. I remember drilling two holes through the transmission tunnel and mounting to long bolts and bushes and shortening the front tailshaft. It is an easy fit, the radiator was new and then top inlet changed/rotated. Exhasust was 2.5 inch, considered large in those days (benders didnt take three inch). It had a nice note especially when you throttled back and you could hear the turbo spin down. The performance wasn't violent, it was more rapid like when you spool up a jet engine on take off, the power came on strong and steady. Best gear was third from about 80 kph you copuld wind out to 150 kph at 7500n rpm in less than 10 seconds.. just hang on to the wheel point it straight up the highway and enjoy the ride....

Im in Hamilton Victoria 300 kM west of Melbourne. The engine I speak of is the 3TC and Gearbox (T50) out of the `982 T18, free to whoever wants to pick it up.
Condition, was running when pulled from car, carbie sold everything else intact..
