camber adjustment Mon, 20 September 2004 16:18 Go to next message
one side of my car has the camber off. Pedders say that they need to fit a camber nut and do alignment etc....cost $295!!

My question is, is there anywhere i can get the camber nuts frm? Anybody know of a magnet device where u stick to ur disc brakes and see the camber angle? where can i get that?

Or are there any cheaper way to fix this? Not gonna pay $295 for a stupid nut!!

Camber nuts aren't just a nut, they will actually have to modify your crossmember before it will be any use.

You can easily measure the camber using a plumb bob and a ruler. Put a bit of thought into it and some high school maths and you should be able to figure it out. Just make sure you are on a level surface.

An alternate solution for you might be to substitute your lower control arms for something slightly longer. That will require a little research though.

If one side of your car is out my guess if that your car has been in an accident at some stage and the chassis is bent. In that case, I would suggest using the camber nuts.

could be a bent strut

could get some camberplates to fix the uneven camber and also dial in more camber if you wish

The camber nuts are not fitted to the crossmember.
This is a newer car with struts.
They remove one of the bolts holding the hubs to the strut.
This has an eccentric shafts on it relative to the bolt head.
BTW I've never heard of "camber nuts" just "camber bolts"

The $295 price would include fitting & a wheel alignment.
If you want to save some dosh, just buy the things, fit them yourself & then get them to do a wheel alignment. That way you'll save on the installation labour costs.

ohh... and learn to drive around the potholes.
Most modern cars have different camber on each side. When you're measuring to minutes of degrees, a millimetre in the tolerance can add up.

if you guys are willing to trust camber bolts.. go ahead.. but seriously, have it in the back of your mind that if your pushing hard at full tilt, using neg 3 degrees, then it comes loose and under load flies around to pos 3 degrees.. you have 1% grip and no chance... i've seen it happen on more than one occasions... the second time the car was a right off..

just find whatever part is bent and replace it, it'll be cheaper, and your geometory won't be so bad, if its affected camber, it could have affected caster, and camber bolts wont fix that...

but yeah... ajustable strut tops would be the way to go.. KMAC, but they're bloody expensive

Camber bolts are perfectly safe IF installed correctly. Many factory cars use a similar thing with no ill effects, eg MA61/RA65 IRS toe adjustment uses eccentric bolts.

i meant camber bolts btw.

Anyway frm where i come frm camber bolts are widely used on older cars that doesnt come with it. Changing the whole whatever it is us just too costly and ridiculous. Camber tops is an option but not economical as well.

Anyway, where can i buy the camber bolts??

i've never used'em, and have only heard them called "crash bolts". just an offset/excentric bolt for the control arm.
a quick search found this bmw page

If you can get 3 degrees adjustment out of a camber bolt, then you've got some serious problems.
I've got them on my car, & can only get to jsut over one degree negative.

And most modern cars with a strut arrangement use them as standard.
eg Subaru has been using them on all models since 1989!
My previous car, 93 Legacy, needed the camber adjusted back more upright after it was lowered 2" to get -1.5 degrees on the front.

If it ever came loose, first thing I'd be doing is suing the company that installed them, or last adjusted them. It is critical part of the suspension, & is meant to be done up with sufficient torque to prevent it coming undone.
