ive been geting strange electrical gremlins recently too mate...for example...turn the key, fuel pump pumps...starter motor wont turn over.
or
turn the key, car wont start, push start it...seems ok...turn headlights on car dies!...open bonnet, beat things with mag light, turn key car starts...so yes...try hitting things with a stick...worked for me

maybe check your alternator if you think it might be the battery.
i thought my alternator was stuffed because my car wasnt starting and the battery was drained.
it turned out that the alternator had just come unplugged
(took me four days to realise )

my old magna needed a good beating on the alternator before it got thrown away... most likely alternator, especially with this OZ weather... one minute hot the next wet and cold cant be good for alternators
