18R-C into 83 Corolla's

I'm having a debate with a friend at the moment about being able to fit an 18R-C engine out of a Celica into an 83 Corolla (K70 I think) Does anyone have any thoughs on this or have actually tried to do it or believe that it wont fit unless willing to spend a lot of money? If the engine fits what sort of mods do you have to make to the gear box, clutch, tail shaft, dif, front suspension, exhaust system, etc. Any feedback would be great. Thanks

i was at a wrecking yard a little while ago and there was a bloke there with a 18R-G in a KE30 rolla.
dunno what he needed to do to get it done but it did fit.
an easier option would be the 4A-C, grab a AE71 corolla Xmember etc etc and swap it straight in.

this site has lots of info you just have to look, this was in the engine swap guide,
KE7x - 4A-GZE, 18R-GEU, 3T-GTE, 7K-E, 1G-GTE
if it can take a RG i don't see why it couldn't take a RC

Ok, looks like the engine will fit, excellent. The corolla he's looking at putting it into has a 4 spd manual. The engine he's looking at comes with an auto and he doesn't want the auto. I'm guessing you can't bolt the 4sp to the 18R. Does this mean that he'll have to change the gear box, tail shaft, diff, clutch, front springs (being a heavier engine) He's an apprentic and doesn't have that much money so I'm just trying to get an idea of how much work will have to be done and how much it will all cost.

Yes, all of the above plus custom engine mounts. It sounds like a lot of screwing around for a tired old 18R-C, surely the end results wouldn't be that quick.
If your friend is looking for a decent upgrade, a 3T from a T18 might be a better option. I'm pretty sure this will be a bolt-in job for an 83 Corolla if you grab a T18 crossmember from the wreckers. If you get the transmission and tailshaft from a T18 that should bolt in as well. Much easier, and it should go a lot better than the original engine.

Well the engine that he wants to buy has been sitting, un run for about 18 months that I know of. So I'm guessing it's going to be a pretty crappy engine. As I've been told any engine will fit, it's just a matter of how much you want to spend and getting the engineers Certificate to make it legal if needed

I managed to get one that's been rebuilt and worked. It came with the RA23 and the whole lot is in a lot better condition than the current one I'm driving. Only cost me $600 so I'm laughing I wasn't looking to upgrade or anything, it was just offered to me real cheap otherwise it was going to get junked. It's a great engine but I don't think I'd bother actually paying for one to be re-built.

Why goto that much effort for an 18R-C???
3T or 4A sound easier and better?
Cheers
