How to tell if you've broke a gearbox.

I've got a w58 and I think I might have smashed it or atleast damaged it, because it makes a bit of noise, a kind of whining high pitched noise that is relative to the engine rpm. I gotta pull the gearbox out and have a look at the engine and all soon anyway, so is there anything I should look at to see if it's at fault?

Hrm
Could be worn teeth..... Makes more sense that one anyway. Particularly given the caning that it has been given. And the clutch wasn't fully dis-engaging the other day, so it was being rammed in and out of gears.

You know you have broken a gearbox when you put it in gear and all you get is a grinding sound and no acceleration...

a whine can also occur if there is greater end movement of the gears (due to wear/damage to bearings) causing the teeth to start wearing in a new position, producing the whine...
pull apart and replace anything thats dodgy

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't it be easier to just replace the gearbox (from a cost point of view) rather than taking it apart,
IE
$500 for a replacement w58 VS cost of fixing it?

Ive "supposebly" got a W58, and when I got in it, the clutch was sitting on the floor, and 5th gear, goes in, but doesnt "click" in, one slight touch, and it pops out, is this due to no oil??

Is the gearbox on the floor or is it in the car? if it hasn't got any oil in it and it's out of the car and not being used, then yes, it could be an oil issue,
but
if it's in the car and your using it and it pops out that easy, it's obviously because it's not engaging properly.. why would that be? well, could be broken teeth I suppose, or maybe the gates a knackered? I'm just guessing though. I would doubt though that the oil level in it would make any difference to how it sticks in 5th.

I thought this too once, but 4 second hand gearboxes later and still not have one that was acceptable (all warranty swaps). I will be rebuilding mine this time round.
It's pot luck really whether you get a good one or not, with the 4 T-50's I got from one wrecker with each one I was very unlucky, and they were all fitted to the car and driven each time!! Then removed and replaced, what a fu(ken waste of time!! I got damn quick at gearbox swaps though.
The W58 I have now has a noisy bearing rattle on light load/deceleration in 4th, which it had from the time it was purchased . I will be fixing this and not replacing this time round
I guess it comes down to: "Do you feel lucky??"
As for the 5th gear problem:
Check the gearstick is engaging 5th i.e. the gearstick is able to move far enough without obstruction (I am sure you have already covered this one)
As someone has already mentioned, check the gate and that there is a ball and spring engagin the gate (sometimes these little things go missing).
Good luck with it.

The box is actually all hooked up ready to go, but hasnt been filled with oil as yet, only just hooked it up to a 1J. BTW, only JZA80 W58 bolt straight up to 1JZGTE's right? Thanks!

How hard is it to fix one, I guess that depends what is wrong with it.
I am hoping mine won't be too hard as it should only be a bearing on the lay-shaft that has died.
Do a google on rebuilding a W58 and a few Supra sites come up with a good set of destrcutions on rebuilding the W boxes. Doesn't look too hard if you have 12 different SST bearing pullers and a press .
