say I had different # of teeth on my driveshaft than in my diff

I didn't count the # of grooves in my diff vs the # of teeth on the driveshaft before I installed the new box.
However, I tested it by slotting in one of the shafts and turning to feel for free play etc etc
If somehow they were different, I would leak oil out the hole woudln't i?

no, as long as the thickness of the shaft after the 'teeth' were correct, as this is what the seal seats itself on.

hrm yes of course
I would think it would be bleedingly obvious if there was a different number of teeth.
SOMETHING down there makes a big "click" kinda when I change directions.. say from reverse to forward...
is this typical of an LSD?

so did you get a differnt box and use your old shaft? i cant see how a different number of splines on your shaft could possibly fit into a differently splined box. no way. remember count the 'hills' on the shaft and the 'valleys' in the box as thats how they mate up.
