My Dad has hearing problems due to shooting as a young bloke. He said the worst time he can remember is sitting in the passenger seat of a car, with the window open, while a mate sitting in the back was shooting out the rear window. The muzzel of the shotgun was within 30cm of Dad's ear. Shocked

He said that it is only recently that people have started to take care of their hearing. They never wore earplugs.

My 22 year old mate is the same... Going deaf already due to excessive shotgun use without earplugs. No No No

Back on topic... I avoid loud music for the very reason that i hate the ringing in my ears that usually follows. Don't get me wrong, I have installed a sub in my car and turn it up a bit. But there is a limit to where the music stops being music and starts to become noise. Confused

hearing loss is one of those things that is progressive and therefor you often dont notice how bad your hearing has become..Ive been djing for about 8 years now and my hearing whils isnt too bad when playing is absolutly shot when trying to hear a conversation with other sounds around me...that and going to sleep with a constant ringing can drive you mad...

yes but

wearing the ear muffs would have reduced the noise level some extent and lowered the damage you suffered, you might have had far worse hearing if you didnt ever wear them.

not that it helps you but mabye ear plugs and earmuffs would ahve been the solution

Hi,

22 and going deaf? You're up shit creek pal. By the time you're 40 you'll be needing those funky little hearing aid things jammed in your ears. Sad

Get another job, pronto - 'cos ears, and the ability to hear, is pretty important. YAH HEAR ME, SON?

My uncle flew in the war (WW2 - the big one) and he's deaf in his right ear and his co-pilot (who's now dead) was deaf in the left ear. They found it easier to shout to one another than use the intercom system, which was always failing. So, they mostly pushed the earpiece away from the ear that is facing each other.

My grandfather (who's also dead) was just about stone deaf. As a kid I would mime talk to him. He'd grizzle up his face and used to turn up his hearing aid to the max, and then I'd shout. It'd scare the crap outta him and mum used to belt me for being slack.

Your right with the reduction in the noise level but some of the noise just went straight through the muffs. I did try using both earmuffs and plugs at the samr time but reading lips and working at the same time was just too much of a bitch.

Doesn't sound like very good ear-muffs! They should have supplied you with something better.
