intercooler pipe sizes

When I was talking to Johal at Jambo on Sunday he mentioned that he had 2.5" piping preintercooler and 3" piping postintercooler. This got me thinking about the benefits of larger piping for flow capabilities versus slightly smaller piping for increased velocity and less lag.
What are your thoughts on this issue?

smaller = better responseiveness. larger = better HP
depends what you're after

so it effectively the same as exhaust manifold design however I would think it would make less difference than the exhaust manifold.
So does anyone have any examples where they have just changed the size of the pipe? I wouldn't think it would be done very often though?
The reason I ask is that I currently have 2.5" piping and I am getting a single turbo soon. Don't know if I can even fit any bigger pipes in though

what engine?
there's usually not much reason for more than 2.5" piping unles you're making monstrous power. for my 200rwkw, 2.5" piping is heaps!

After all the discussion in another thread, I have 3inch alloy piping for my cooler but I still have 0kW at the wheels I do however have about 400hp of bling bling

Hmm, well my 2.5" piping is making 0kw at the wheels also. Is there some sort of problem with it?

ok, if you have 3" pre intercooler and 2.5" post intercooler what would the difference be between that and 2.5" pre intercooler and 3" post intercooler as I have seen both ways used.

If you're going to have different sized pipes, you're better off having the larger pipe pre-intercooler since the air is hotter and thus less dense. After it's gone through the intercooler the same mass of air will have less volume so the smaller pipe will be less of a restriction.
I'd say 3" IC piping is overkill in 99% of cases though!

I think along the same lines as Norbie - 3.0" is total overkill for most applications (barbies 9 sec gemini uses 60mm i believe).
When the air is hot and expanded then it does take more volume, however it is also easier to move around (less density) post intercooler when it is cool, it is more dense and therefore harder to direct.
The current set up on my corolla uses 2" pre intercooler and 2.5" post intercooler. The new intercooler that I have is set up for 2.5" in and out.
There is an article in the tech docs by Rod Try that is for calculating T/B size - the same maths can be used to calculate pipe size (it is gleaned from Corky Bell's book and he suggests using 450fps as acceptable intercooler pipe velocity - the terminology is semi-correct, but acceptable for determining size).
I hope that this helps.

Ahh 3 inch pipe is the way to go. 3 inch for everything, exhaust, intercooler, fuel lines and even the air conditioning if you have it. Imagine all the extra Hp
I had no choice on my cooler, I had to go 3 inch.

3" cooler piping would be a PITA... think of the holes you're going to have to chop to run those pipes, and the space they'll eat up in the engine bay! My 2.5" pipes are bad enough.

Thats the only good thing about the TA22 engine bay. The pipes dont have to run far at all
We modified the end tanks on my cooler and the original inlet and outlets started of square and then formed into 2.5 inch pipe. So we needed the 3inch pipe to form the square section and thought we may aswell run the rest of the pipe in 3 inch aswell.

at 3" fuel lines!
Thanks guys. Saved me some money and I will be getting 2.5" in and out now.
