Cheapo intercooler idea Thu, 23 September 2004 15:31 Go to next message
I have 1 series 5 rx7 intercooler sitting here, and can probably get another fairly cheap, and was wondering whether i'd suffer any considerable pressure drop in cutting off the end tank from one side of each, and having them welded together?

From what i've read, these cores are quite good (from an autospeed article) and I figure if the pressure drop is negligible, i'd end up with a decent sized cooler for < $100.

Run them in paralell and the pressure drop will be even less. Dont run them end to end.

If the tank design is good, it will work well

Cheers

Hmmm...a possibility, but it would seem to negate my "cheapo" mandate Laughing I'd need some sort of Y-pipe (x2) and extra piping?

He means something akin to what Norbie did with two 2JZ intercoolers. Get new tanks made from them and run them in parallel:

Haha, but it was massif! How much did it cost to get the new tanks incedentally? It's working atm right, you fixed the leakin?

Yeah leaks are fixed now. I know a guy who runs a metal fabrication shop, he welded the extra supports on the cooler for $50 from memory. The original job cost me $280 plus the cost of the cores ($250 each).

How well does your parallel cores setup work Norbie? I've been thinking about grabbing two smaller cores from something...

Cheers,
James

Works extremely well... 305rwhp with stock turbos. I haven't got around to measuring pressure drop or inlet temps, but I'm seeing 18psi at the manifold and after a good flogging the intercooler outlet pipes are cool to the touch (inlet pipes are red hot), so that would suggest it's doing its job quite nicely.

In theory the pressure drop across the core should be half that of the stock JZA80 core (which is known to flow quite well), however if the cores had been joined in series the pressure drop would have been doubled. That's why joining two cores in parallel is the way to go.

I like the idea of a cheap but decent intercooler, but isn't that about the same money that you could get a GTR core for? Obviously it works well but it's just a query.

I know the Garrett 'race' series bar and plate intercooler core, 600x100x300 sells for around $650-700... Surely this would have been a better starting proposition for custom tanks etc, then spending $500 on second hand cores???

With the availability of these cheap coolers atm, unless you are chasing big hp (500+) They should be more then sufficient, as a cheap alternative to doing it properly....

I didn't know new cores were so cheap these days. I investigated that option when I got my cooler made, but this was ~3 years ago and things were obviously different then; there was just no way I could get a cooler of that size made for less than what I paid.

Re the cheap coolers - I was talking to Dave from Autosprt Engineering (top mob in Adelaide), and yes, there are heaps of cheaper cores now as they are being made in China and they are really starting to get a good supply going.

Dave offers all of his customers the option of a cheaper core - I think the saving is about $300 from memory.

But remember, not all cores are equal - will be interesting to see what the comparison in quality and performance vs price actually is

Cheers
