Stripping a Sprinter

Hey ppl,
Today i stripped my sprinter, taken everything out except not sure how to remove the dash... unscrewed almost everything in sight. Any ideas? (Planning to transplant an AE92 dash in!)
Also, in preperation for some stitch welding, I was wondering if I should try to remove the tar stuff on the floor pan... Has anyone done this?? Only way I can think of is chisel it off then get the whole thing acid dipped...
Any comments appreciated!

there's a bolt behind the top vent on the passenger side
and a couple up high behind the glove box, but remove glove box first and it should pop off with a litttle pull, good luck

Yep, that bolt behind the passenger vent and one way up behind the glovebox caused me headaches too......
Best way I know of to strip the tar stuff is to use a heat gun and you should be able to peel it off in huge pieces.
PM Youngy about that. He will tell you exactly what to do.
Cheers,
Jeremy.

Tar stuff? Is it just for sound-insulation?
Is there that much (I am dreading to look).
For sound insulation on the floor under the carpet, do they still use tar? If not what? (prolly pastic, that make everything else out of plastic sheesh)

if your talking about the dash as in the instrument cluster you need to pull off the dial on either side (the wiper and headlight dials) then pull off the black twisty things, then theres a white coloured nut under there which u just screw off

Yep its tar with a backing all over the floorpan. I simply used a 1" chisel and a whole lot of time. Then used a rotary wire brush on a drill to remove the rest of it, and then liberally applied POR15 and then VHT enamel.

To remove the tar you can also use dry ice, it will freeze the tar which u can then take off in large chunks.
otherwise use a heat gun and a chisel, then use a solvent to remove the residue left behind.

Took the tar out of my AE86 not long ago, used a heat gun and a chisel. The thicker tar at the front can be heated up and pealed of in large pieces, the rear tar is thinner and heats up real quick and becomes very soft and difficult to scrap up in large pieces. Small pieces of tar that was left was sanded off with a drill sanding disk. In all the tar wieghed about 20 kgs.

use a wirewheel on the areas you intend to weld, make sure it is free of residue or crap!
satoshi: the tar is all throughout the car for sounddeadning, it is quiet effective at it too.
im dreading the day i do mine haha

I tried using some acetone on the residue... does an ok job on the residue, but there are a lot of small bits of tar that wont come off... wire brush doesnt do jack.
Any ideas? Besides going at every tiny bit with a chisel....
Anybody?

That's about the most common way ppl remove it.
However, the other alternative I've seen is to use dry ice ...

The Club4AG link on the build up of Taka's car is a good reference point (picture wise anyway) about stripping a car and building it up ... pretty much what I'll be doing to my 2nd AE86 soon ...

i did mine not to long after getting the car, used a heatgun and paint scrapper, then got all the residue off using kerosene on a rag and in the more difficult spots kero and a brush, came up like new....
However, the tar on the fire wall takes absoloutley ages and you MUST have EVERYTHING removed from under the dash, so not sure how many of you will go to that extreme.

A suggestion: using those little wire wheels you get at Bunnings on a drill is useless - angle grinder with a bigger (and more expensive!) wire wheel is far more effective..

Nope none of the tar holds anything together, but you will reveal some holes in your body.
And as far as i know, seam welding is a way of strengthening the body and making it more rigid.
