Removing the Inlet manifold on a 1G-GTE Mon, 27 September 2004 09:14 Go to next message
Has anyone ever removed the inlet manifold on a 1G-GTE while it was in the engine bay. Just want to know how diffult it would be? Is it possible to get to the bolts while the engine is in the car?

i removed the intake (from a wrecked RA40) while engine was still in car - it helps to remove all the wiring and fuel rail first - plus there's a few bolt under the manifold that will cause you some greif.

if you can - remove the manifold runners from the TVIS assembly, and prior to that remove the throttle body and CSI.

I got the fuel rail off and all the cam covers. Just worried about those bolts underneath. They don't look accesible. Whats a TVIS assembly and CIS. Sorry still new to the tech terms??

It's very easy to remove it once it's out of the car, I did that on the weekend.

In between the inlet manifold and the head is the TVIS which is the Toyota Variable Intake System, which is basically about a 10 mm spacer that houses these little butterflys which change which inlet runners are being used. If you are using the standard management then these will be being used. However, removing the tvis system doesn't have to be done to take the inlet manifold off, just be aware that it will look like the inlet manifold is coming off in two pieces when it is infact not. It's the TVIS that's coming off with the inlet manifold. you can just push the tvis block back onto the head and it'll stay there by itself.
As for the bolts. They aren't easy to get to unless you have the right tools. The cam cover won't particularly make any difference to your ability to get to the bolts, it's the bolts underneath that your going to have difficulty with it hte engine is still in the car. You'll need to put your hands up underneath the manifold to get to those bolts. It may even be worth while removing the oil filter to allow slightly easier access..

Good luck.
