AE86 brake lights and parker lights crossed Tue, 28 September 2004 13:17 Go to next message
Funny problem that popped up with my sprinter the other day.

When I put my foot on the brake pedal, the brake lights come on (as usual) but so do the dash lights and my parkers (just as if I had turned my headlight switch one click).

If I am on the brakes and turn on my parkers the brake lights get a bit brighter too.

I plan to get out the multimeter and trace some wiring soon, just wondering if anyone had seen this problem before and could give me advice.

Thanks
Hen

Had a similar problem with my old KE70. It turned out to be a blown bulb.

Yo,

Seen this before where someone has put a single element globe in instead of a twin element globe and it backfeeds down the wires because the single electrode bridges both wires.

Failing that - Bad earths are also a favouite.

I see this alot and 99% of the time it is because someone has fitted the wrong globe as toyoda said. Have you changed any rear globes lately? If so I would check them.

I fitted a new bulb about two months ago, but the problem only popped up about a week ago. And I am sure it wasn't the case that it was happening earlier and me just not noticing it. I will check it out anyway though.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Just had another thought if all the globes are OK.
Does the AE86 have a rear light failure warning light on the dash?
If so the problem could be in the rear light failure control unit. This will have both brake and tail light wires going to it and should be somewhere near the rear lights or behind the trim in the side of the boot. Not sure of exact location but could be something else to check.
Maybe someone else has more info on it.

Good luck
