Just wondering if an 18rc head gasket can be used in 18rg, there the same block right, i wanted to get a monotorque gasket as ive heard there good and you dont have to retension the head with them.

the 18R-c gasket will not fit on the 18R-g as the timing cover is a different shape. monotorque do one for the 18R-G anyway. they are worth about 80 bucks

The gaskets are different but are interchangable , the bolt holes in the gaskets at the timming case are different , the 18rg gasket has a round fire-ring and the 18r fire-ring is a bit oval shaped .

I was thinking that the 18R-C head gasket would fit the 18R-G because they have the same block, even though the heads are completley different they are the same at the bottom where the block and head meet. A difference i have noticed in the rc and rg heads is the rg dosent have water holes that match up to the water holes on the block just near the head bolt holes, the rc head has matching holes so the water flows through. Anyway is anyone sure that the gaskets are compatible, i do know the head torque settings are definetly lower the the R-G, bout 65lbs

Unbeleiveble that my local engine machining shop had a 18R-G gasket in stock, they machined my head for $40 and the head gasket cost $90, shit! Anyway what i was wondering is whats the easiest way to know that the number 1 piston is on top dead center, so i can get the timing chain on the cams in sync.
Also will the motor have much more compression after the head has been shaved a bit, it was about 9.7:1.

to find TDC its usually the easiest to turn it until the rotor points at the number one piston on the distributor cover thats when it should be at top dead centre on the compression stroke and if you want to make sure it is exactly on TDC then with the rocker cover off move the crank a little more to the point where both valves are closed and a little more either way will begin to open one of the valves.
