5mge oil leak Thu, 30 September 2004 09:33 Go to next message
After months of trying to get my engine going it finally runs. Problem - it leaks oil out of around the exhaust manifold, it looks as if the bolts that hold the manifold on have penetrated some sort of oil gallery?

before the engine was first run it was overfull with oil. would running the engine with too much oil destroy some sort of oil seals?

That doesnt make sense.

Are you sure its not from the cam covers? or where the cam towers bolt to the head?

Is its whole length of the manifold? or a section?

is not the cam covers.

the area where the cam tower bolts to the head is not leaking.

it leaks along the whole manifold. seems to bubble out between the gaps. I dont get it either. the head would need a major crack in it to do that?

Also, at idle it blows black smoke and doesnt like to idle once driven. the afm i am running was setup for an early model 5mge. should this affect it?

Yeah, it makes no sense.

Maybe the head is cracked, but its now out of my knowledge.

so noone else has any ideas?

looks like it will have to come apart this weekend to find the culprit. problem is that everything is packed so tight.

One question, does the oil leak stop once the engine's running?

My car once stopped, the oil leaks through the valve holders into the cylinder (but probably does leak into the intake and exhaust since when we first pulled the cam cover off, we found oil in the opening of the intake. We also found sand in the intake, but thats another story Very Happy )

As as a result of this, the engine when initially started will blow black smoke as the oil is burnt off. The engine also runs s**thouse while it's doing this.

Perhaps it's the same problem?

(My engine's a good ol 5-ME)

no oil leaks when the engine is stopped. it sat there with oil in it for months without leaking a drop.

once started it bubbles out between the manifold and the head, then when driven it seems to come from somewhere behind the power steering pump.

the engine is running like a dog and blowing healthy black smoke but i am quite sure the afm is not correctly setup for this engine and that is what is causing it.
