Would anyone have any idea why my 3s-ge has been reving at around 2000rpm when it is cold and it decreases very slowly with the engine temp. the lowest it will rev is at 1000rpm and this is when it reaches running temp. it has only done this since i cleaned the trottle body... anyone got any ideas???

1000 is about right
could turn the idle screw down a bit if you wanted

The car should idle at around about 700-800rpm...it's not exactly a high compression beasty that needs to idle at a billion rpm (it runs at 9.0:1)
Turn the idle screw, located on the 'back' of the throttle body.

whats that big plastic screw located on the left side of the TVIS pipe for? I first thought that was the idle screw, but it seems to have no effect, if you take it right out it sucks air in, but i cannot work out what it's for?

it's not just that idling at 1000rpm is too high that bothers me, it's also the fact it takes a while to step down.
dingaling i have no idea what that big plastic screw is for either, i need a motor manual badly...

how long is awhile?
For comparison, my 7mgte when first started will be revving 1200rpm+ and takes about 5-10 minutes to settle down to 650rpm.
perhaps you cleaned that throttle body out real good, and it's working as it's supposed to? I dunno it's hard to know without more info.

If it's the plastic screw im thinking of it is for the idle up adjustment when the aircon is on .

dingaling- it goes down very very gradually, it only decreases to 1000rpm when the car reaches maximum running temp.
Does anyone know where the air bypass valve is located?

thanx for clearing that up for me TA22-3SGTE
ke70_strolla: You should try this.
After your engine has warmed up and settled down to it's 1000rpm idle speed, you should adjust the idle speed screw. it's on the throttle body right next to the TPS. It's usually hidden under a plastic cap. See if it lowers your idle, and in effect it might also shift your warm up idle down abit too. If the screw does not help then it'd be a good idea to remember it's original setting and put it back to what it was and look else where for the idle problem.
could be something simple like a loose clamp or a crack in that big pipe connected to your AFM and throttle body letting extra air in.
My friends celica with a gen1 3sge is also having idle issues, his idles too low (500rpm) and starts fluctuation the idle (500rpm-1500rpm), also his engine won't idle up when under electrical load, i suspect it's his idle speed controller.
