Oil on Clutch Fri, 01 October 2004 12:54 Go to next message
My clutch has begun slipping over the last few weeks.

I had a look at what I could with the gbox still on, and I can see gear oil inside the bellhousing.
It looks like its leaking from the input shaft.

Now, can this get on the clutch plate?
And if so, can I clean it? or do I have to throw out the clutch plate and get a new one?

Cheers.

EDIT: Clutch plate and pressure plate are brand new, probably only 1000-1500 kms.

Repair the oil leak, wash the clutch, and it will be fine.

Hopefully it is only the oil causing the slipage

another option (to avoid using solvents on the clutch disc) is to boil the disc in water for a min or so.

thats what we used to do with MX brake pads anyway Rolling Eyes

Pretty sure yours is the rear main engine seal, not the front GB seal (engine oil VS gearbox oil). Pretty hard for oil to come out the rear seal and get onto the clutch!

I had my front seal leak on my gearbox, washed everything with brake cleaner/petrol, but it still slips (and is grabby/shuddery when cold)!

Hmm the boiling in water seems interesting!

Cheers

is it usually parked pointing down hill? i've heard it'll then run to the disk along the input shaft, otherwise, i think it's unlikely to be slipping from the oil.
it takes an awful lot of leaking for a few drops to find their way on to a spinning & coverd clutch disk.

everything leaks some, but how bad is yours? most just flow down & out and never get near the disk.

Dammit

Thats almost EXACTLY what mine is doing now, after I washed it.
Fairly good when cold (wont chirp but minimal slip), but still slips when warm.

Oh well, I guess a new clutch is the go in a month when I get pissed off with it.

i got the same slipping in my stock celica, no oil leaks that i can see (box and motor dry as and floor spotless).

clutch is bout 6mths old (15000ks) but i know people that have had their clutch for a few years and can still rip sick smoke shows so i cant see it being a worn clutch plate (obviously removal of box would tell me for sure but i dont do anything in the car other than circuit racing on the roads Rolling Eyes )

also mine only slips when shifting to 3rd and 4th ONLY

I used petrol on brake pads, when thebrakes leaked but I then lit the petol to burn away the fluid.
I would say this works on clutch's to.
Clean the clutch with petrol and light it. It will burn the petrol and the oil.

You could do what I did. Put your car into a mechanics for 4 months while you try out 4 different clutches before ordering one brand new from Japan at a cost of around $3k.

Better not slip now!
