Question for maths buffs out there (are there any??)

I'm trying to work out the amount of force exerted on an O ring sealing something. Basically, I want to find a formula for the surface area of a toroidal ring - has someone got a book on fluid mechanics, etc. that's better than the one I've got?

Yeah, had a think about it over lunch - it's basically just the surface area of a cylinder the diameter and length of the O ring /2 - thanks anyway! (amazing what lacking food can do to the mind, in'it..)

if I understand the question correctly.... that's SA for 1 face. if you want total 3d SA, that's 2x the above, + Pi.2.R1.T + Pi.2.R2.T where T is the thickness
edit: Just finished my coffee and realised what an O-ring looks like, thus my formula being useless (but I like the way it looks)
for an o-ring, it'll be (Pi.R1.2).(Pi.R2^2), where R1 is radius from centre of o-ring to middle of the rubber, and R2 is radius of the actual rubber piece.

thats what i'd have said

pick the person who was silly enough to do maths for a little while at uni and actually be good at it

Must say I'm impressed that I actually recieved a few replies for this - there must still be a few people that use this site that occasionally use their head
Anyway, that was the easy part - the difficult part is knowing the REST of the problem, which may end up involving cutting an expensive part in half.

hey you didn't answer my question
I've done a fair bit of third year fluid mechanics so I may or may not be able to help you out (I must admit, I do suck at it a little)
