Im about to start the ground up restoration of a ta22 but i wanna get away from the standards. What are good mods for the body and interier and what should i not do. Im thinking of keeping the standard interier but going greu to make it look a bit more modern but i am going digital dash. Im putting my 18rgetu engine in as the crossmember is already modded for it. what can i do body wise and what shouldnt I do? Pics would also be good if people have them

Hi,
For interior, check out dashboard restorations at http://www.dashboardrestorations.com.au/.
They do custom stuff and may be able to help you. Also their site has some good links to other useful stuff.

You have to be carefull with changing these old "classic" styled cars as it is really easy to make them look really crappy. Personally if I had a TA22 I would be hunting down a GT front splitter and some nice wheels. Openup the flares on the guards a little if you want to put bigger wheels under it and leave it at that. A careful choice of colour and a good coat of paint does wonders for them.
Interior wise, my advice is to avoid the digital dash and stick with the original instruments.
I am using the original seats retrimmed in my 28 and they are great. Tidy everything else up and you will be happy.
Hmm. I guess I just like them pretty much standard. Not really helping then am I.
Try getting creative and drawing up some concepts on papar or using photoshop if thats your bent. That way you can evaluate a few concepts without spending time or money.

Hi,
If the dash is okay and you're gonna rip it out, lemme know. I can always use a good TA22 dash.

I'd honestly say that you will get the best effect if you keep things factory style, and neat....Also correct for the period of the car - think how tacky those gemini's with huge chrome rims, metallic penis coloured paint, and white vinyl interiors look....
I'd look more at restoring the interior and exterior than going crazy modding, with clever and discreet mods (ie discreet stereo install, period style race seats like cobra make, period correct steering wheel, gearknob etc). If you just have to retrim, use a color and style of fabric which, while not factory, could plausibly work in a factory style.
A paint colour which would be in keeping with the age of the car (but think of the colors available in the seventies, there were some very eye catching colors, oranges, greens etc in fact, look at the new falcon range's oranges, etc), and I would go for a set of old school Japanese style rims, like charcoal colored 8 spoke RS-watanabes (or the replicas from Black Racing), Longchamp XR4's, SSR's or similar.
I'd detail the engine bay in a neat-but-still factory style, so see if you can get pics of the engine bay of a factory 18R-G car and work from there. I'd also be tempted to go to carbs on the 18R-G, wouldn't be hard to pick up a set of the factory mikunis...
A restoration/modification approach with an emphasis on the style of the car's period will be much more impressive in result than the more typical approach of trying to make 2004 stuff look good in a 1970's car. Taking an approach to keep things looking in period (but not standard) doesn't mean the car has to be slow either - tasteful and quick is definitely possible...
Also think about how much street cred restored holdens and stuff (EH's, FC's etc) are getting - I bet a EH with 18" chromes and pink paint would be seen as tasteless..But a tidy original style one on period mags (or even lowered factory rims and caps) gets respect.
Thats how I would do it. You can't make an old car look modern without it being tacky, well, most people can't.
But its your car.

yeah i'm going blood orange for my ta22
my interior is the original stuff but retrimmed in velour(that has now faded) which i'm going to dye black. then just get some new carpets and i'll have a decent interior for pretty cheap.
so yeah dont put fat chromies or hothouse green paint or any of that kinda shit on it. leave if looking right for the period even if its not original.
just my 2c

ive ripped out the old dash from it (which was glued in) and found the original colour is a aqua colour which looks good so ill be going back to that. Ive decided to keep the original interier but modern it up by maybe painting it grey like newer cars. As for engine i will be using my turbod 18rgeu engine solong as it fits right. Im only going for 15 inch rims at the most with a mk2 corona diff and ma61 lsd center. Possibly flare the rears about 1 inch to get a bit wider wheel on but thats all for the body.

for the interior i found this dye that comes in spray cans. works pretty well for me, but then again i'm going from grey to black. still worth giving a shot though i reckon.

I think it looks good, BUT, im not a fan of the back..I prefer...hmm...well my original GT taillights (along with the fully original rest of the car)...but still top effort, and quite tastefully done.

What I ment to say is I like tham looking pretty much standard.
The best thing you can do to an old celica is to throw some technology under the bonnet.
now let me go back into the garage to work on said 1G

Ive seen a celica either in the members rides section on here or the classic celica forum that simon heads up,with the best interior ever! it was completly redone and looked like a new cars interior,go the digital dash as they can do some amazing things these days, ive seen an rx4 with an r34 dash and it looked bloody brilliant..as for the exterior all i say is keep it out of the 70s dont put those bold on flare things on as they look shite,go 16s front wheel drive offset and mabye a custom bonnet of some sort.if you have the cash of knowhow go nuts
