icon4.gif  Ra23 Bangs and Hisses...Any Help? Thu, 26 September 2002 14:09 Go to next message
Hey everyone,

Just need to know whats goin on with my baby,

Mostly when i start cold, backfires while engines turning over,
when i go to turn off, sometimes bangs, rattles, takes a while to shut off and ive just noticed a hiss of air that comes out, quite loud.

Could this all be caused by a 'holey' exhaust as it does have a few holes in it.. or could this be an engine problem.

Also, shortly after starting, while driving the car seems to jolt, like it is missing or something, i havent checked the plugs yet but i think this may be that particular problem.

Quite a shame, the car looks like an absolute beast, only bought it the other day, immaculate body and interior but engine seems to be a problem (18r-c).

Any help would be much appreciated!!

check your plugs, points and wire to ignition points make sure it has a good connection.
tappers might need adjusting but check your manifold gasket, might have a leak.

and let the car warm up for a few min before driving off in the morning as if i don't let mine warm up it gets a bit jolty.

but there is to many things that could be causing it so check those few to help narrow the problem down

Check the timing also.

Cheers

They are the sounds of a top quality Celica. Mine does it also. I don't know why either. I've had it for over a year now. Is the choke on it operational? I had big problems with mine until we realised that the auto choke was disabled because the heat pipe on the carby didn't sit on the exhaust manifold. So at the moment I've hooked up a manual choke to it so when it's cold it doesn't back fire as much and it doesn't jolt around when I go to drive it. I usually warm it up for a few minutes before I drive off otherwise it just constantly back fires.
Mine also takes a while to actually stop after I've turned it off. I don't know why it is, I guess it's the timing on that one. And sometimes it makes a big kinda sucking noise. No one has any idea why it does it, but I think it could be a carby thing.
It might be a good idea to put it into mechanics to do a compression test on the engine because on mine Cylinder one was on 14, cylinder 2 was 200, cylinder 3 and 4 were on about 50. So basically my engine was only half running. After they adjusted the tappets it ran a lot smoother. Still not brilliant though.
Another thought is the timing chain on 18R's do stretch and rattle around on the inside of the timing case. I've had to replace mine and that also made a considerable difference.

Good luck, let me know if you can solve any of the mysters. Smile

Thanks Guys,

I'll check the timing but i examined the carby and manifold and noticed a significant rust hole in the manifold, this is prob the backfire prob, it seems after the car was restored, the previoius owners took off the exhaust system and replaced it with a rusty old original....lovely, couple bucks later and i should have a nice sports installed. Money money.

As its been said, check your choke is working correctly.
I love the fact i got an old 18R which has a manual choke.

Holes in the exst can cause pops and bangs out the exst on at specific times. Mainly when in gear moving, but foot off accel pedal.

The "Run On" which happens after you switch off the ignition is actually the engine running backwards. Its a very bad thing. It mostly happens when the carb is setup wrong and the idle setting is too rich. It can also happen when the engine is very hot (above normal).
The best fix for this is just to put it in 1st gear and drop the clutch just after youve turned the ignition off.

hehe yeh holes in the exhaust manifold do tend to cause a few pops and backies.. That is a shame the car has been well restored visually but mechanically it is not so sound..
is it a manual chocke or automatic? i love the good old manual choke 18R, winter it loves it and wont be driveable for a good few minutes warming up or else sounds like a tractor, but summer hasnt been so bad..

Is that true the engine is running backwards after you turn the car off and it 'runs on'.. That sounds awful for your internals.. I remember a brothers mate who had the biggest thrasher of a tercel and it used to do that shit and keep running after he'd switched it off hahahaha.. but that car was as i say thrashed to f*ck.
Glad my 18R doesnt do that.. :/

David mate, pity its interstate but, i am selling a complete and running 18R motor with extractors, standard induction (manual choke), AirCon gear.. new exhaust & rocker cover gaskets, new air filter element, always ran well for me Just needs a new home.

Anyhow good luck with the car,
Guy

When i had the webber on mine whenever the timing got out just a little bit (cant remember which way) it use to run on this happened mainly in summer though. Generally as a rule if it back fires through the carby which isnt really back firing anyway its timing out the exhaust its mechanical like valve timing i think. Check to see how lean the idle circuit is running as well cause if its too lean the valves get to hot and ignite the fuel that is still coming through the carby.
