icon5.gif  Help - How to correct speedometer reading after conversion? Sun, 03 October 2004 13:26 Go to next message
Has anyone had this problem after an engine or gearbox conversion ?

I put a 1ggte and gx81 box into my RA65 celica (4 cyl) and the speedo reading is about ... 10km/h slower i.e. driving at 50km/h is actually 60km/h ... or approximately 15% slower ..

How have you fixed it ... im happy to just drive it as is because i can just go with the flow of traffic, but its an issue when I am driving late at night when i am on the road alone ..

Any ideas / ways of fixing ?

thanks !

You can swap the speedo gears around for the correct ones - I presume the GX81 box is a W58? Get the speedo gear set from an RA65 W57.

get under the car and find where the speedo cable connects to the box. there should be a 10mm bolt or something like that holding the drive gear in. Undo the bolt yank the drive gear out grab a pan to catch the oil then wack in the new drive gear, do up the bolt and connect the speedo cable. done and done.

If you do a search, you'll find a good thread where this has been talked about b4!

There are obviously 2 gears (one on the output shaft of the gearbox and the one that you bolt in).

Not sure how well it will go if you change the other gear to a ra65/w57 if the inner gear is different?

Cheers

umm what are the chances of my speedo reading MPh as opposed to KMh ??

60 kmh on my speedo is equivalent to about 100 KMh in other cars ...

You could also change the diff ratio or put bigger tyres on.

But this is probably the expensive way to do it.

I think my car has the same prob. I just bought it and its still in Japan but its a Celsior (LS400) with a 2JZ conversion. It has an aftermarket rev/speed meter but ideally i would like the speedo to be correct. Would changing this be as easy as stated above or am i looking at a massive job which isnt worth undertaking? Im willing to put in a bit of time to get it done as a working speedo would make the car feel a whole lot more complete that one that doesnt work. I test drove an R33 Skyline that had an Infinity Q45 V8 conversion and its speedo was way out. It was quite off-pissing...
Anyways i would appreciate any advice.

jaycar sell a small kit to alter the digital pulse output from the electronic speed senders in the later toyota boxes. I was going to use one for the R154 behind the 1J in my chaser, but I was lucky and the speedo reading is almost perfect.

there are manual gear converters and electronic converters,
jaycar sell a electronic kit one as mentioned. older speedos
use a magnetic system which able to be calibrated so iv heard.
converters are around 80 manual to 120 electronic i think and have an input and an output with a set ratio adjustment per unit.

now some popular cars will come with the same speedo and gearbox but a different diff im assuming and thats where
you find different speedo drive gears from... now i reckon that
by now there is probably gears avaliable commercially too.
