what causes fuel in oil

noticed my car has been HELL SMOKEY, talking cloudes of smoke on accel, decel, idle etc etc, initially thought it was the turbo but i checked the oil and it looked and smelt like fuel. drained it and yep, the sump was mostly fuel, the oil didnt even FEEL like oil anymore so i hate to think of the engine wear that was inccured.
replaced the oil, went for a short drive and all is fine, no smoke, checked it when i got back and it was still clean., but im guessing it will happen again.
what causes it?

in cars with a mechanical fuel pump, if the pump diaphragm ruptures, fuel will piss into the sump.. not good.
in an EFI car, the only sources for fuel into oil are the valve stem seals (being turbo, fuel could be blown thru the seal, into the oil system), or piston ring blowby where mixture gets past rings.
how's your compression?

I presume it's not running disgustingly rich... and that the injectors/pressure reg aren't leaking? Does it tend to seem flooded on one/all cylinders when you start it?

nope, starts first crank every time. no smoke on start up.
also, doesnt seem to run super rich, blows the usual amount of black smoke out the exhaust as per all nissan engines..
