The low current starting connection to the solenoind may be contacting a positive voltage source, most likely the postive terminal on the solenoid which is connected to the battery. If this occurs the solenoid activates, pushing the starter pinion into the flywheel ringgear and energising the starter motor.
This could be the cause of the symptoms you describe, but like any problem the answer is outside under the the bonnent of your car! Go and have a look...

The starter itself may have a broken shift fork (internal to the starter) which could cause the driver to slide forward and mesh... No doubt by the sound of it the pinion (teeth) are probably very worn also, possibly the ring gear on the flywheel too. Best bet to take it off yourself or take it to an auto elec.

I had the exact same problem with my GF's AE92 Seca, I was sure it was the starter, and it was only the battery,
Maybe you should get a second opinion.

Update,
Located a 4AF/4AC starter at a wrecker near the autoelec, picked it up took it down (a bosch unit that was clearly much bigger, but I was still hopeful it would fit.) Worst luck, didn't fit
The wrecker was able to locate a 4AG starter ($65) from another location which will be delivered and fitted tomorrow.
When I was delivering the wrong starter they showed me the starter they had removed from my car. Absolutely shagged! Armatures burned away/melted cases, broken fork, non existant brushes, teeth half gone from pinion.
Hopefully it will be all fixed tomorrow.
Julian.

Faaarrrrk....ongoing saga continues...
Called em at lunchtime to make sure they had gotten the starter, yes comes the reply....we are just putting it all back together now.
Cool I'll be there just after 5 to pick it up then.
Walk in the front door to see the rolla still on chassis stands, bonnet up and doors open
Whats wrong I says to the boss......no reply/looks pissed
Ask again..."everything is back in, starter works, but car doesn't start. No spark, can't work it out"
More checking around whilst I'm there reveals that ECU seems to be sending the signal but its just not coming out the other end....
I am taking a copy of the blacktop manual, spare ecu, and ecu pinouts to them tomorrow morning.
hopefully this turns out alright.....hate to think what the bill is going to be like......

Well the bill shouldnt be to bad considering it wont start after theyve done work to it. You cant run a business by charging people for things that have gone wrong due to some other work. But anyway , the broken shift fork probably cause the whole lot to go on the starter....
Let us know what the problem was with it not starting.

they are now looking into pin L1 which is apparently not feeding what it should or something.
They have tried getting the fault codes from the computer and it just comes up blank......

Re: Starter motor problems, 1 WEEK LATER, YAY IT RUNS!!!

Well, after dropping it off tuesday last week, I finally got the Rolla back tonight!! Turns out the original igniter had died (I drove it there however?) and the igniter plug itself was faulty in that if it was just plugged in as normal the car wouldn't start, if you applied pressure to the plug and REALLY pusshed and held it on the car would start and run, let go and it stops. Once that was fixed everything was fine, boy were they happy to see me go!!
Top marks to the guys at Brisbane Auto Electrics though, they were very good about it all, and the charge was very reasonable considering all of the time and effort they spent on it. Everything has been triple checked on the car now so I guess I don't have to worry about anything electrical being on the way out
Just happy to have it back now.
Julian.
