MA61 Supra Info

Hi,
I'm interested in getting a cheapish run-about car and I am thinking along the lines of an MA61 Supra. I checked the Redbook and saw the avg price varies from around $3,500-$4,200. It'll be parked in the driveway - got no garage space for it - and as such, it'll have to be an auto so the little lady can drive it, or move it to get her car out. Besides, I got the RA25 when I want to do a bit of manual cog changing.
If I go looking for one, what are the main things to check, other than obvious rust spots and oil leaks? Are spare parts a bitch? Engine woes? Steering issues?
If it's a poor choice of vehicle, I'll look to another vehicle model, but thought I'd check the response on the MA61 first.
This is all in aid to keep the '25 off the road while it gets detailed and spruced-up, then to be used on Shows and cruises only.

Rusty hatches are the biggest pain.
Front end dodgey accident repairs
Shagged suspension

The 5ME will drink like a fish and provide no power in the process, especially tied to an auto.

Not as good as a 5MGE and manual box, even with dodgy spark plugs they turn the MA61 into a fun car
If you can track down a MA61 Celica XX with a 5MGE and auto, at least you'll have a decent engine and it won't require a conversion. They don't seem to be as thick on the ground on that side of the country though.

The 5me ma61 didn't have bad grunt for it's era - what else was there around then... it'd prolly have dragged off an exa or a celica or a cordia of the the same era and i don't think stock commo's or falcon's would have got a look in either. I don't think i'd like to drive an auto though.
I've had my ma61 since 99 and haven't really had any huge problems with it body or mechanically - apart from the engine dieing, but it had done nearly 250 000 k's. It was just a good reason to drop a 7mgte in. It's still got the original factory front shocks on it even and they still handle ok(ish).

Hehe, just cos everything else was bad too doesn't it mean it couldn't pull the skin off a banana Compared to the 5MGE version its BAD, and with an auto, it's painful.

Agreed, mine was painfully slow when I got it... I was almost glad when the 5M-E died a couple of months later and forced me to do a 6M conversion. It totally transformed the car!

All this talk of 5ME's has aroused my inquisitive nature as someone has made a claim that I think is ludicrous but he "reckons" that through twisties and straight bits he could take me on and safely beat me in an MA61 powered by a five speed 5ME against my 1GGTE Auto soarer, personally I think he is on crack and my hilux could take him on...
What do you guys reckon? seeing as you know so much about these supposed "ghey wif teh aids" motors...

Jag, trust me, my 1GEU was match for a 5ME. The 1GGEU would shit on a 5ME when its wound up, auto or not.

Hey All,
I do agree with most of you that the 5M-E drinks like a fish and when it's mated with an Auto is slower then most slugs, but hey... At the time of when it was released back in the early 1980s, it was Great
I enjoy my car when it is running but it's a pain when it's just sitting there as something terminally went wrong
Dad said to me that the MA61 *he believes* is a Grand Tourer not a drag car, if it was a drag car they may have released it without the electric goodies...
Cheers.
