AE86 Pricing....

G'day,
I want to have a rant.
Just been to the for sale section, right,
1.some fella has an ae86, that, aside from shocks, springs, mags and a 4agze conversion is basically stock. No LSd, no vented brakes, rear drums, and NO ENGINEERS CERTIFICATION....All for just $8,500-10,000
2.A trueno that has had all the good bits ripped out and replaced with stocky aussie parts- $5500....
3.Import Trueno- $10700 (maybe its funding the guys trip...Is nice though)
And all the others hovering in the $5000+ region. Now I admit there are a couple of okay ones for sale, like with a 4age for 4300,and another stocky one that went for like 2,500,
BUT- correct me if I am wrong, but this is a 18-odd year old car. An economy hatchback car. All of which are kind of up in the kilometres, and in the case of the modded ones have all been built with basically second hand parts...Now they are really only rare because they weren't much good when they were new, and toyota couldn't shift the bloody things. You have to spend big money on a stock one to make even remotely good handling, and heaps of cash to make it go hard.
So why pay all that money? The more people actually pay the ridiculous asking prices on these things, the more the prices will go up. Like the gze one for 10k. OMIGOD, what is this guy trying to pull? I hope nobody is silly enought to pay 10k for it.Fu(k its hardly a step up from a bloody gemini really. In stock form, the sprinter is little better than a ke70, and basically the same as an ae71. Both of which are considerably cheaper. See it makes me mad, because I would love to get an ae86 to mod, but I'm only prepared to pay what one is worth, which is really like 1500 maximum (for a stocky).
So I'm saying- get a clue people and start paying reasonable prices for them, so people don't keep asking stoooopid amounts and pushing the prices up. I can't believe how many people willingly pay like 5k for a rattly, sloppy, worn out ould 1980's corolla. The mind boggles. And if rust gets so many of them, thats why good ones are expensive, where are all the cheap rusty wrecks?
cheers,
floody

However, I believe that there is also another side to all of this ...
The AE86 has become popular recently due to a number of factors which has driven up its prices:
1) It's light RWD handling characteristics
2) Engine conversion possibilities are endless
3) Though I hate to say it ... Initial D (if you have to ask, where have you been for the last 4 years???)
4) As with 3), the drifting craze
However, as an AE86 owner, I can somehow see how some cars will go near the $10K mark. For starters, engine conversions aren't cheap and when an owner has put in more $$$ than the initial car price itself, it won't surprise me that it gets close to this mark:-
ie. Car - $2,500
Engine - $800
Conversion - $3,000 ? (including tuning, exhaust, fuel system etc)
Suspension - $1,500
Sound System - $1,000 ?
Paintwork - $ ????
Gets close to the $10K mark eh? Also, contrary to public belief, these cars are rare as hens teeth in Japan, hence the high prices paid for genuine AE86 imports with the 4AGE. Not quite like the S13 when anyone can rock up to a Jap auction & find heaps under the hammer.
That $4K price for the 4AGE AE86 is damn good value if you ask me. The person only wants to sell it so he can acquire his friend's 4AGZE Sprinter. If only I lived in Perth, I would have snapped that one up.
My rant for the day ... hah hah ... owners only hope that prices will drive resale values up and not insurance premiums ... doh!

yes i agree some of these cars are over priced, but we live in a market economy where the buyer set the price..
at the end of the i think a ae86 looks better then a ke70

I will admit 10K for a relatively stock AE86 with a GZE in it is a bit excessive when i paid 12K for the following AE86 Trueno
4AGE. Head built by Wilkins Race Engines. HKS Titanium head gasket. 5 speed TRD close ratio gearbox, 1 to 1 5th gear. TRD 5.1:1 limited slip differential. Large rear axles and bearings. Ceramic button clutch, CrMo integral roll Cage. 40mm Bilstein inserts with Eibach competition coil Over springs, front vented discs, 2 piston calipers with Pagid racing pads. Rear discs, 2 piston calipers with Pagid racing pads. 60 litre aluminium fuel cell (boot mounted) with dual switchable high Pressure Bosch pumps. Sparco Pro 2000 seats with 5 point Willans Harnesses. Terratrip 404 . Terraphone Pro intercom. Momo deep dish rally wheel. Carbon fibre dash, navigator foot rest, rear fire wall and numerous other panels.
with only 38000K's on the clock.
But the gearbox alone to replace new is well over 6K by it self, so i think i got a good buy.

They get these big values for the exact reason as you said, you want one and so does everyone else. Add that to them being rare and owners can ask bigger prices, supply and demand.

Howdy,
I agree with you all about the high pricing of Sprinters. Mine is actually the one with the 4age in it. I sold it tonight though and the buyer was very happy with the condition and improvements done to it so yeah...
Now its time for gze !!!
supercharger is off and t3 turbo is on it : )))
Going for a better look on the weekend
