hey guys, just a quick query to those who have had their cars resprayed, or have done it themselves. i need help for when i get my hands on a new celica

how much did you pay and for what work?
what work did u do yourself and how much did that save you?
who did you use and were they good (quality and price)?
recommendations for who to use?
anything else?

ive tried talking to a couple of places and its looking like $4500 upwards.. for a relatively simple type of job including a teeny bit of rust cutting. jebus Shocked

My two-pack Celica cost bloody thousands, so theres no point using that as an example, but I did help my brother achieve a bloody nice paint job for 1/2 the cost. We striped the car, assisted in sand back, asked for acrylic instead of two-pack, and completed the re-assemble ourselves. Show quality job which only cost him $3500. It's been in two magazines and he's won a heap of local car shows back home. I'm planning the same attack for my daily driver 79 280ZX when I move to Brissy. Now the Celica turned out perfect, but seriously to drive it every day would bring a man to tears. One scratch and I'd need a month off work to get over the stress.

Good luck mate,

Justin

well im not going for "show finish" here, i just want nice paint thats kinda shiny and looks good. if im going to build up and ra28, i better bloody do it properly!!
i can sand, strip, rebuild, attempt bogging myself... dunno about the welding though....
i'd be tempted to paint the car myself, but i dont want to really fvck it up!

you saw my car on the cruise, it was done in my garage with the door open and just acrylic paint and the finish was alright.

i'd like to start spraying myself, for sure first few times might turn out a bit dodgy but once you get the nack of it i reckon it would be great knowing you did it all yourself and will save you heaps in the future.

DIY!
$300 for paint and thinners plus blocks and sandpaper.
I recommend this and will save you heaps. Labour time is the killer and I'm sure someone has a mate that can spray. Once you've seen a guy do it I'm sure you'd tackle your next spray yourself. Just don't leave too long a period between sprays and make sure you pay attention the first time!

http://groups.msn.com/gtfour/st185cs.msnw
You might have to frig around to find the pic. It's the "my first Celicas" pic.

Sorry I didn't have a full car shot. It would have showed off the lack of side strips which I painstakingly filled and sanded smooth. Anyone who owns an ST16X should perform this mod!!

My first Celica was all done by me except for the actual spray.
I bought the materials needed to fully sand it right back to original undercoat and another couple of sands all over between coats. I got tennis elbow as I did it all by hand.

I also bought the thinners, prepsol and paint which cost me about $300 I think. Then a mate sprayed it for me in the Port Macquarie Bus Service bus parking garage. (to the loprik who stole all my rubber sanding blocks and sandpaper may you rot in a pile of your own stench one day..bus driving scum)

I used acrylic and it came up well.

For anyone wanting a top notch paint job at best prices by a long way then let me know. One of the best in Sydney. He also is more than capable of full custom metal working and is in hot demand to do those hot rod conversions where you chop the roofs and stuff. Guaranteed mirror finish, if thats what you want.

(got into a lot of trouble with that white ST162, a lot of outruns. those plates at one stage were wanted in 3 states from chases that I luckily got away from. I'm am reformed now and realise that speed kills)

Witzl...my mate does a good all over for $1500 and he is really one of the best.

hunty:
well I cant say that I'm proud of my behaviour but I wouldn't take any of it back. The chase in Brisbane I had was very much like what you'd see in a movie minus the crashes, bumps and explosions. I'd be happy to tell of a few or you could ask a fellow Toymodder who was actually with me at that particular time. He was navigating as I don't live in Brisbane and had no idea where I was going.

I don't waste my breathe usually cos a lot of punks assume you're full of shit...which a lot of people are so it doesn't really bother me.

Like I said though, I'm not proud of it and I had a very real addiction to driving fast. I eventually got caught in a roadblock which was setup in a small town. But my addiction was real and thats why I had to drive for my life in Brisbane about 2 months later.

Sometimes we all should step back and check ourselves. Be realistic and diagnose if you have a problem before something bad happens. My concern is not for you but more for the innocent people who aren't willing to accept the risks you take. I myself couldn't care less if I died while driving fast when a wheel falls off etc. it's just not fair if someone gets killed due to your irresponsibility.

I havent resprayed my car but it really helps if u know people who do it. I know 4 people who spray cars and boats for a living and I can get my car stripped, fixed up, sanded, resprayed any colour/paint, baked or whatever, etc etc for $1000. Includes paint and other things. Or $300 to spray ontop of the existing paint, that just covers the cost of paint.

And before anyone says it's gonna be a dodgy job, it's not...it just happens I know the guys, and they've been my friends since primary school.

One of my friends has gotten their car resprayed and it turned out very very nice. I would have to say he has one of the nicest Silvia around.

As was said earlier, the labour is the worst...I'm doing all the prep on my car once I get the rust out I can't do myself, and then I'm going to get a mate to paint it for me...

As you can understand I will not divulge Chris's name just now and would rather keep things here for now to stop a lot of tyre kicking and stuff for him. I don't want to upset him, just provide straight up customers. I will endeavor to get a more complete price list on various paint jobs, labour for different degrees of panel work and how much you can save if you do say about 90% prep work. (anyone who has done their own prep will agree that a pro is best left to finalize things!!! You think you're a star until the buffer comes out Rolling Eyes

I would also like to think about a group prepping weekend/s then maybe a group discount on spraying. This dudes pretty cool and would even be open to showing us some trade secrets and good tips for DIY for next time.

Maybe we could have a prepping/surfing/camping weekend. Bring your own board and a bottle of rust kill Wink

This guy is very good at working with custom metal jobbies and think that you guys should start thinking about customising your ride. I always wanted to mod my ST162 to resemble a late model Supra and the vents in front of the rear wheels.
I did a quick photoshop job of this and I think it would look wicked and practical.

I think the Witzl-mobile could be saved! (but tack on some extra bucks. If I got him to do it with us as a personal favour he'd do it cheap I'm sure.) But the downside is you'd have to let me do some prepping and pretend to be a good mate of mine hahaha

I have just finished spraying mine. If you get the right equipment and take your time, there's no reason why you can't do it yourself. However, for a one-off, it's fairly expensive.

ie. (for acrylic)

decent compressor $6-800 (plus water traps etc)
decent spray gun $150
etch primer $50
surfacer $50
paint $170-260 depending on metallics/pearls
clear coat $70
cutting compound $30
polishes $70

So it's still going to cost at least $1000 unless you can borrow a compressor. However, second time around, it's VERY cheap. Also, I just painted the ENTIRE car, inside and out for that price (a shop quoted me around $4500).

It does take a lot longer, but the finish can be as good if you do it well. If you're painting acrylic, if you stuff up, the solution is just some sandpaper away. But be prepared that the prep takes a hell of a lot longer than you would imagine. All up, I think it's taken me about 2 months of weekends to get to where I am now, but the result is very shiny and looks great.

hcca, Wher did you get that quote for $4500? And what did that include? I took my TA22 to a pannel beater a while ago and they said drive in drive away will cost 10K! I was like fuck that! That was including all rust removing, back to bare metal inside and out, full spray with clear then rust proofing! Not sure on the type of paint though!
I would'nt mind paying 5K max!

you gotta shop around mate... i heard the odd $8000 or so for full metal repsray... but searching further you hear $4000 $6000 and then the odd legend who will chop the price if you prep it yourself! Surprised

Can't really remember where it was - I got all sorts of quotes. You should have no difficulty finding a quote around that price. I got one quote for $1500 assuming there was no prep for them to do. Drive in drive away is definitely going to cost mega bucks. 90% of the money is in the preparation. Even taking your bumper bars and tail lights off will save you about $100. If you've ever stripped a car down to the chassis you'll realise how much work is involved (not to mention putting it back together!) Smile

You can still prep it for a bare metal respray if you're careful - do one panel at a time, strip with paint stripper and sand off anything that is left and then go over it with fine grade paper (like 600) with a random orbit sander. Clean it with prep wash and paint with rust converter. It can then be left for ages (up to a year if it's kept dry) without paint. There was probably about a 3 week gap for me between stripping some panels and painting and it was fine. I'd post some photos, but I need to get the car out of the garage first - the flash on the camera is reflecting off the paint way too much to be able to take a decent photo (I reckon that's a good sign Smile)

Professional 2 pack is not necessarily more expensive than acrylic either. Acrylic takes a hell of a lot more work to get a good finish (sanding between coats etc) whereas 2 pack is just a quick 'spray it and it's done' deal. However, I believe a lot of show cars use acrylic paint because can give a better finish over all. It's a lot easier to fix things and most imperfections can be fixed with a bit of 1200 wet&dry and some polish. The same can not be said for 2 pack.
