When you remove the auto, play around with the wires on the box and a multimeter.

There will be 2 wires that will be open circuit when you are in a moving gear, and short circuit when you are in park or neutral.

You have to join these 2 wires in the chassis wiring.

You will also need to find out which 2 wires become short circuit when you are in reverse, so you can still have reversing lights.

Hiya,

I have completed my conversion (auto to manual), and for some reason I didn't bypass anything on the NSBU switch (I unplugged it at the connections near the inlet manifold, and my engine started OK.

The one thing I am having trouble with is the reverse light wires.

Any thing that you find out here would be a great help to me Very Happy

Hahaha, So I'm NOT the only one who has been driving without reversing lights for god knows how long?

Its very basic to set up.
When you put the shifter in reverse, it just makes a short circuit between those 2 wires the come out of the side of the box.

So you have to give one of those wires 12v IGN, and the other wire connects to the wire that runs down to the reversing lights.

Get someone to stand at the back of the car, and with you in the glovebox, progessivally give every wire a touch of 12v, see which one lights up the reversing lights.

Then thats the wire you connect to the wires at the side of the box.

Done, Simple, I'm just slack.

I would be simple if I still had the gearbox and had thought of that at the beginning. Nope

I reckon that I can trace one of the wires by the wiring diagram, but the other does not match up. The best plan at the moment is for me to get the harness and NSBU switch from a auto trans and do exactly what you described.

Barney : When you say conversion kit, are you talking about pedals and such ? I had one for a Mk3, but that was sold to twnican_ke20, and he has since sold his car.

hey i'm looking into doing a 5 speed conversion on my 7m.. although its in a cressida and is non-turbo.. i have had a search around and still cant find which gearbox is appropriate.. i was thinking the five speed from an mz20 soarer but was told this would send me broke and would be almost better off going with a complete front cut and doing an engine conversion at the same time (!?!).. i was wondering if there are any viable alternatives.. i'm aware that gearbox mounts will need to be changed/modified.. has anybody got experience with this or can point me in the right direction?

thanks alot

You need a W58 transmission from a non-turbo 7M, the most common source being the MA70 Supra. Should be able to pick one up for around $300.
