"We are trying to sort out why they were travelling together"
Next it will be illegal to be within 500m of another car, then it will be illegal for two cars to be travelling in the same direction to a similar destination, then only one car per road at a time and all cars to be fitted with square wheels to linit speed.

Hi,
Defensive and other sort of driving courses would be a waste on some people. It's a bit late to think what a dick you've been when your car is flying sideways into a pole at 120kph. Bit late to put those skills to use.
You can't put brains in statues.

When i watched the news, it said the cars were exceeding the '70 kms/h' limit...
They must have been going at unbeleivable speeds to do that sort of damage to the car, they showed the road and it was a long flat stretch ( from memory) so i dont know how they managed to lose coontrol and crash like that?
You could barely recognise the car, apart from the headlights...
Aparently the guys in the civic were mates... 4 in the skyline, 3 in the civic.

WTF?
And on a serious note...
Driver education will help the general populace to be safer on the roads, and I think it's a great idea. But I don't think it's gonna stop people from drag racing or fooling around on the roads, it's just gonna make them safer doing it (kinda).
It's just kids acting without thinking. Sometimes they fuck up and die, or kill people. It sounds like a horrible thing to say, but it's not that bad. Our government and the people in it economically suppress other countries and indirectly kill thousands of children each year for profit and cheap shoes. That's much more malicious and wrong than someone risking their life for a thrill IMHO.
Although, I do from time to time see people do retarded things on the roads around pedestrians or other traffic and think "idiot, go find somewhere quieter to do that shit."

shit i just saw the report, and it was about 50m from my house on dandenong Rd,lucky i was in Sydney..im getting sick of trying to pull half dead cunts out of their cars..
as for solutions to these type of problems..
better training, weekend track days promoted as the only place to be racing etc..and by no means should you be able to drive quick cars with under 5 years driving exp and adequate training...

exactly! there is never going to be a single solution to this problem, but there are many things that can be done to reduce it...Id like to see everyone convicted of driving 30km over the speed limit do the defensive driving course I had to do,and also see some of the images and footage of crash victims etc..Once again, I cannot emphasise enough the fact these possible solutions will not be the answer to everything, there will always be dickheads on the road, the trick is to have enough broad educational tools to get through to different people with different mindsets.

Yeah it was an R33 GTS-t, flon Blitz I/C, P-plates, right near Chapel St, sounds to me they should of been crusing in an Excel and not with something with so much power. Seriously though any Tom, Dick and Harry can get a powerful import, but it comes down to the driver/Are they capable? Like who the fuck slams into a pole on a straight road (depending on the conditions, maybe?), because I've never seen it happen at any Drag meets. ANyone see what I'm getting at?
Anyway I'm happy it's no one I knew or even off this forum, sad to happen, but it also gives the majority of us enthusists a hard time.

I think the media have taken things a bit far here though... they are just blaming all of the worlds problems on speed again.
Every accident I have ever seen was due to poor judgement / lack of concentration rather than excessive (uncontrollable) speed.

hehehe.....skyline's worst enemy.
maybe a power restriction should be in place for p platers not overboard....but enough for them to have a couple years experiance in the "lower" powered car. in queensland they have that for motorbikes. for the first couple years u can only have a bike with a engine capacity no greater than 250cc . all up to the driver's capability, some people are more capable/suited to driving faster cars.
practice makes perfect

Yes they are blaming speed again. I read from a govornment report that the current speed crackdown was trying to reduce road deaths by 20%. But according to the same report, 20% of road deaths are due to speeding. Firstly, you will NEVER be able to reduce road accidents due to speeding to 0% without stopping cars from being able to break the speed limit. Secondly, WHAT THE HELL IS THE OTHER 80% AND WHY AREN'T THEY FOCUSING ON THAT?!
Anyway, it's sad that these kids died.

I think its sad that the skyline died... it could have been sold to buy a decent toyota!
If you can't drive in a straight line then you should either get a wheel alignment or get off the road I think!

What I blame for drag racing is the introduction to the show "The Fast and the Furious" and "Too Fast Too Furious" which introduced "Ricing" cars, NOS and Turbos...
That movie inspires children wanting to get fast cars and when they do get it, they drive it without any thought...
That is my 2 cents worth. -
I hope that I did not offend anyone and will retract comment if needed
Cheers.

I agree there should be restrictions on the types of cars available to young drivers (hey i'm 25, doesn't worry me!)
But having said that it's still quite easy to lose it in a 'Starfire' powered 'rona let alone a true performance car. Going onto Tom Uglys bridge with the rear end unintentionally sideways across 2 and a half lanes is not fun...

But if you havent been/dont want to go then you cant really make assumptions...
It really depends... sometimes at the runs you have the usual dickhead bogans doing burnouts and shit, drawing attention to you when you dont need it, and acting like just because they are at all illegal event, because they are breaking the law anyways, that they dont need to act like they have a licsense hence their behaviour...
But i have also found ( and this is with a mass group of cars) that when police and such do rock up, everyone jumping in their cars and trying to leave, everyone lets everyone in, nobody panics and freaks out and crashes, and are generally pretty curteous.
Sometimes its quite amazing to watch and everyone gets out safe and well.
This is from my personal veiwing, i have only seen one accident at the runs, and it was 2 mates accidentally crashinginto each other, one doing a u turn with no lights on, and the other driving up the road and not seeing him, t-boned him, and there you go. Even then, they were both still trying to figureout how it happened. I have heard about accidents at the runs when people freak out and etc, like the guy who got run over and killed when the cops rocked up... last year or the year before wasnt it?
Its probably also the fact they were P platers, i mean, do you ever hear stories about mddle ages people runnig and driving cars too powerful for them? I mean yeah you can restrict the amount of power someone has in their car, but then once they hit the age limit, or whatever it is, and can go up in power class, wouldnt it be like learning to drive and control the car all over again>? And as said, conditions permitting, it is possible to lose control of any vehicle....

Guys, spare a thought for the deceased: they werent the drivers.
That stretch of road is 'notorious' for drag racing, and for good reason. Anyone who lives in Melbourne knows of that stretch and its proximity to Habibs street er, Chapel street.
