Jab what?!!?!
Weak points of an ae86 chassis Tue, 05 October 2004 04:08 Go to next message
I been trying to find this answer for a while.
The main weak points of an ae86 chassis.
As in first places to give or most prone to it. People always talk about overpoweering an ae86 chassis, and stitch/seam welding it.
For surely someone has to know the maint weak point or the places that will give under stress first....

ahh lets see front Chassis rails will defineatly bend if hit sideways, ive had a top front strut mount go through the chassis, the panard rod ripped the mount from the floor, and the chassis is creased a little behind the front seats,

i could be here all day !!

Ben.

As stated above the front chassis rails are inherently weak. they have notches in them which is designed to help them buckle in a head on collision.

I think someone on these forums also said something about the point where the chassis rails meet the firewall... can anyone confirm this?

..I remember someone else here saying with powerful cars (200~250 HP) that the roof can buckle just back from the A pillar, especially if the car has a sunroof.

Where the B pillar joins the body is also where AE86's commonly rust, I believe, and weaken the body as a result.

On a similar theme, I have heard that you can buy (or make) brackets you can bolt onto parts of the car to improve strength/rigidity (not strut braces, but under the body) - any one know where these are generally fitted on the car?

yes, where the chassis rails meet the firewall the welds seem to come undone quite a bit.

You can buy front and rear strut braces, an A-Spec brace(from steve-ae86), a full cage, under guard bracing and cusco make some braces that go under the front to help stiffen up the chassis

remember, in small offs on the track and road, if you have strengthened certain parts of the chassis and not others, you can tear and pry the other parts of the car apart without knowly doing so.

so if your going to brace, from front to back:

under tension rod bar (cusco)
front strut brace (any)
4/6/8/12 pt roll cage (any, cams approved is better)
b pillar bar (hard to find, ssworks make one)
b pillar floorpan brace (do luck makes the best)
c pillar bar (ie aspec brace, useful for harness')
rear strut top brace (techno pro spirit, revolver, ssworks, ect)
tower brace (cusco type)
rear torsion/stabilzer bar (silk road)

then go the seam weld/spot weld/chassis riviting to make sure your internal bracing isnt killing th 20yr old orignal welding.

And then I read about some under-fender brackets, but couldn't find a decent picture of one.

How's that? Surprised

...oh, and Silk Road make a panhard rod mounting point bracket, but they don't have a pic of it.

Do the Do Luck bits go inside the car, or underneath it?
Looks like they hoop over the transmission tunnel.
