1G ECU Question

Hey guys,
This might come across really dumb, but I'm just trying to put into context, how does the ECU know the position of the engine given it has no crank or cam position sensors persay?
I'm just thinking about an aftermarket ECU down the track and how I'd be able to run the engine in 3 banks of 2 as opposed to the 2 banks of 3 injectors.
Thanks,
Nathan

I ass-ume it has a hall-effect (or similar) sensor in the distributor.

Gidday
Distributer provides 2 signals to the ecu, first a reference point for each revolution of the distributer and second 24 reference per revolutions. that is it is also a crank angle sensor.
