exhaust or cams? hmmm Tue, 05 October 2004 05:30 Go to next message
ok, im after a little more midrange grunt for my 4age 100kw.

ive got about 500$ to spend on modification.

MY PERSONAL choices are out of:

- exhaust
- cams
- gearbox

gearbox:
new gearbox will get rid of my gear crunching in 2nd and get me going a little faster cause of the faster gear change i guess.

Cams:
dont know how to install them personally, and they are probably gona be quite expensive. i dont know much about Cams, but i want something thats gona give me a increase throughout the rev range. ive been told 254-264 deg cams are a good choice.

exhaust:
my exhaust is the stock exhaust with a newish P-shooter muffler put on by the previous owner, but it sounds pretty good in my opinion. probably good potential for power gain.

what are some other ideas other 4age owners have?

why is that, apparently CAMS are 400$, and i think an exhaust can be done easily for 500$, gearbox can be bought for 200$, and costs 375$ if i want it profesionally installed.

in summary:

NA performance mods do sweet fuck all by themselves. do it all, or do none and save your money. NA performance is expensive as shit, and VERY hard to do properly to achieve any noticable improvement.

cams without intake, porting and headers is useless
headers and exhuast withou porting and cams is useless

you get the idea

fix your gearbox

i agree with Ed, building an NA motor is about making a system work together.. bit by bit will not be very satisfying until the end. not like a turbo motor where you just up the boost and it's better..

that said, an exhaust will help even a stock motor a little..

for $500, fit the gearbox yourself, then get an exhaust..
cams porting and intake should be done together imo..

dude go for cams man. I'm gettin cams soon and i heard its pretty straightforward to install mild cams. Dont bother with 4age aftermarket headers. Stock headers are supposedly good for about 185hp.

Might wanna fix ur g/box first though.

You heard? Oh OK, just ignore what Ed and oldcorollas said, they don't know anything about building NA engines. Rolling Eyes
