heat in an engine bay Fri, 27 September 2002 11:47 Go to next message
hey fellas

First i'll say sorry mods that this is probably in the wrong forum section, i just want to reach the largest audience Smile
The point is, i would like to get the car resprayed black. i understand the implications of jet black paint (must replace all panels that aren't perfect, have headlights on most of the time etc) but am wondering about it's heat absorbing/reflective qualities in the engine bay. For instance, will it absorb heat and peel, or will it make the entire engine bay hotter? Perhaps i should leave the original grey in the bay? Then it looks crap though...

Opinions please!!

I dont think that black paint in the engine bay would absorb heat from the engine anymore than any other colour! Black paint only really absorbs the harsh reflections from the sun!
The only thing I can think of is that it make the engine bay much darker making it rather difficult to do some work on the engine!

I think the only prob may be the extra heat that the bonnet will absorb from the sun. Heat radiating from the engine should be any different as dark colours only absorb heat from light energy. (you know, the spectrum and all that shit...)

thanks for those answers guys

i'm just obsessing about keepin the engine cool (as possible), within a decent budget.

i'd thought of lots of things, but never the fact that a black bonnet will absorb heaps of heat from the sun Razz
stupid me

That is actually wrong.
Things which are black in color do actually absorb and radiate heat more than any other color... Not just light. Weird i know.
It is the reason why heatsinks/radiators/etc are painted black.

MWP has it right.

I haven't tested this but I've been told to try this out. Freeze water in milk cartons. One painted white, another black. When solid ice - take them out to melt. Black one will melt first.

What puzzles me is that Techline's Black Satin ceramic exhaust header coating (which will radically cut radiated heat) is actually black in colour.

Wonders never cease.

Now you can all experiment and find out

http://www.reachoutmichigan.org/funexperiments/age subject/lessons/solarheat.html

or

http://www.madsci.org/posts/archives/oct98/9049410 57.Ph.r.html

radiation laws:

http://csep10.phys.utk.edu/astr162/lect/light/radi ation.html

However in all the above cases the radiant source is the sun and or another artificial light source. The question is will the engine cause the engine bay to be hotter if it is black being that the engine is the source of heat and to be honest Ii am not completely sure, but I am certainly going to say YES at this stage.

I often wondered why radiators were painted black... Why then are intercoolers silver?

Also, if radiator places paint a radiator black...won't that have no effect because the heat in the water is inside the radiator where it is still (most probably) rust or copper coloured?

Most all the new/better radiators are not black at all! Check out http://www.are.com.au/ Lots of useful info about this on there!

would it really matter what colour the car is aslon as the air intake and oil are cooled? i dont think it wold matter much if the engine bay was painted black. the engine and turbo and extracor radiates the heat. the only problem i see is heat form sunlight which would probably be minute compared to exhaust thermal properties. i'm no scientist but i think paint colour wouldnt madda if u have a cold air induction box and engine/transmition oil cooler in the right places.

How funny is that, just reading the ARE site. Most companies had switched to aluminium radiators and plastic tanks in the early 80's...Ford only did in 1998 Smile
