pre-loading diffs

Can anyone explain the principle of preloading diffs?
I've got a T series diff and want to make sure it is in spec before I install it.
Team,
What are the specs - preload torque, play etc and how to measure etc
I've been told the crown/pinion play should be less than 6 thou all round measured with a dial guage. How to preload?
Hope the pic comes out below - showing the loading ring, one of two. I take it that this locates the crown against the pinion. I've heard about using die blue to locate contact area on crown ring.
How much lateral play is allowed in the inner cogs that attach to the axle?
David
P.S any leads as to add a pick - i'm using a Mac

The pic has to exist in the net. You just link the path to it, and it gets displayed here on this board.
In other words, if the pic is in your computer, it cannot be linked here.
You'd have to figure out how to set it up at your web providers server, then just link it to this forum.

I can do that for you, send the pic to me at:

Artsi,
way cool, thanks man. Just looked at the first URL it looks good.
The bolts on my crown wheel have these brackets under them that have tags folded up apparently to stop the bolt from turning?
Is it possible to repace the seal oneself or is this best left to a an expert?
BTW I found the image doesn't have to be on the web! Just the javascript to inset the image tag doesn't work with IE5.1 on Mac. Netscape works. I think you can just type the image tag into the message giving a path to the image. The http ref that pops up using the button can be replaced with the file tag and path to image on your computer.
Thanks again for the post, a picture is worth a thousand words.
Cheers
David

Have you tried to view the picture from another computer other than your own? Probably not as all I and I say everyone else get is a broken link as the link is referring to a directory that no one else can get to ie your computer.
The picture has to be online somewhere in the world for the rest of us to see it. Or you could expose your own computer to the rest of the world - ie become a webserver in effect. But you might not like to do that.
Have fun

Bugger,
your right, looked at the source code - and there I was thinking that it was like an attach/upload function Makes posting pics quite an effort. But I can see how the forum admins would want it this way else the disk space on the server would get chewed up. Bout time I got my site together.
