Timing Belt woes :( Wed, 06 October 2004 07:28 Go to next message
before takin my timing belt off I marked where it was etc, now I go to check the position and the marks dont seem to be right, how do i check its right :/

On some cars a little chip is cut out so they both line up exact

1G is easy. Make sure the engine is at TDC, line the notch on the cam gear with the notch behind it. Piece of cake.

the chip he's talking about is probably on the outer edge of the crank pulley

SO hang on do line up the dot of the cam gears to the notch on the flywheel when its at TDC or with the notch behind the cam gears on top...i need to change my gears and want to make sure..and how can u make sure its at number one cylynder and not 180 degrees of on the 1G...

Yeah, make sure its at TDC. Then line both the cam gear notches with the marking on the bit right behind them.

Damm my are at the bottom now..the dots on the cam wheels whnt its at TDC...like 180 degrees out..but that can't be right the motor would run then..which it does...or would it

Well....the cams are going to spin how many times for each revolution of each full cycle?

You'll need to turn the engine around one more time.

if you want to make sure your not 180 degree's off.
take number 1 spark plug out, get a long straw or something long, put it in the spark plug hole, turn your crank and watch the straw, you'll find TDC without a doubt. Of course that is just a useful trick with cars that seem to lack appropriate markings. (datsun bluebird comes to mind). Still it's a foolproof trick.
