I know my $400 US forged pistons cost me $150 Aus in customs!!
The pistons were actually $800, but only out $400 on the forms. Very glad I did that if not the customs amount would have been crazy!

I think its $300AUD including postage.
If the value comes under that, you pay no customs.
If its over that, you pay a %.
Its on the customs website, or just pick up the phone and call them.

does it also depend on whether it is "new" vs "used" or a "gift" ?

Thanks! I thought it was around $250. I've tried looking it up on the customs website before, and given up.

If you ask the sellers really nice they can put 'Sponsored' on the box and it gets through no probs.
Thats what I did.

"WARRANTY REPLACEMENT PARTS"
and with full value
otherwise
10% gst and 15% automotive import tax

there is no minimum!!!!
it's worked out like this.
car part value x 15% = duty payable
(car part value + duty + POSTAGE!!!!) x 10% = GST.
if the total payable is over $50, you pay.
if the good value is over $1000, you pay a processing fee to customs also.
i think it is changing in 2005 tho, going down to 5% (check out the APEC tariff site)

they don't always pull everything up tho
around christmas is the worst time to get stuff sent as most things get pulled up.. i've had US$600 in parts get thru, but US$50 in parts pulled up and had to provide receipts etc etc..
depends on the sort of day the customs guy is having

I've boght car parts before - RCAs worth 100 odd AUD, and some spare parts, and never paid any GST OR customs.
How can you charge GST where the seller isn't in Aus? That's nuts!

how can the bastards justify charging a "goods and services tax" on a service (postage) that was incurred and PAID FOR in a different country!!!

it does work the other way as well though. If you make parts here (in a business) and sell them overseas you will pay their tax and no GST here.
I just got my $400 odd dollar injectors in from the US no hassles at all. Although they are fairly small???

Go to http://www.apectariff.org/ (get free user/password from http://www.bugmenot.com/) and examine the categories very very closely. There are a few different categories, and if you're lucky you should be able to declare your purchase as a duty free item. It seems pretty random whether they get you to figure out duty on your own or if they put it on themselves, but if you get charged duty, double-check on the site to make sure they're not gouging you. Either way you pay GST, which sucks, but what can you do? Get your stuff declared as under a grand in value? But then you can't get insurance if it's lost/damaged in the mail.

It depends on how much duty is payable on the item.
They won't charge you if the duty is under $50 usually which means you can get away with around $300 worth of most items.
Note: When they charge you duty they will also charge you about $75 customs clearance fee's so really the minimum you will pay is about $125

I imported an exhaust for the ZZT231 a few months ago and it cost me AUD$1,000 in Tax and duties considering the exhaust cost me just shy over AUD$1,000. Total I paid for is AUD$2,300 just to save a few dollars .
Now I have learnt to ask the shipper if they could remove the item from the box and not put it in an obscure box. Not one with TRD CAT BACK Exhaust written all over it with TRD Seals not broken all over it
I got my TrueTrac and other stuff for the MA61 from the states, no issues there, I got them to classify the item as "Gifts" and it got past customs no problems
Cheers.

Most of my parts(and this wasn't at my request) had the customs sticker and the "product example/demo unit" was ticked. Didn't cost me a cent.
