Engine conversion - should I convert to manual at the same time? Sat, 28 September 2002 07:59 Go to next message
Or is it too hard?

My car is a GA70 Supra...I'll be getting a JZA70 half cut which will be manual. I have been offered to swap the manual parts for auto parts, like the box, torque converter and stuff...

But anyway, if it had the parts, which it should (it's a front cut) would swapping it to man be difficult?

If the front cut is a manual then making the change would be easy, all the bits would be there in place including the pedal box etc.

If you plan to swap to manual eventually, definitely do it now, cos every little bit you need (pedal cluster, crossmembers, bellhousings, master & slave cylinder, flywheel, clutch etc) will be a bitch to find without getting another front cut.

And if you love manual, why the hell would you swap a 5 spd for an auto??? Shocked

Yes, you'll need a new front section as the W58 is a different length to the R154.

and also when they "offer to swap thae manual stuff for the auto stuff" they too forget that the looms are different and the loom in the manual half cut will not run the auto, and i dont think theyd bother swapping the looms over, you have to take the inlet manifold off to get it out.

SO I dont really need to get a new tailshaft, just modify my existing one??

I dont know what the tailshaft does, but I assume that power doesnt make any difference to the tailshaft I need.

So thats good.

Yes you modify your existing tailshaft (well the front section anyway), but typically a driveshaft shop will just weld your existing flange and yoke to a new tube of the correct length.

Of course the easiest way would be to find a factory tailshaft from a JZA70 Supra, but they're probably not easy to find!

The strength of the tailshaft is very relevant to the power output of your engine, since the tailshaft transmits the power from the engine to the wheels! However I imagine all Mk3 tailshafts are the same spec (including turbo models) so it should be plenty strong.

Hmm...I hope ur right norbie, coz if anything, the tailshaft on my supra will be the weakest one, and then I'll be putting one of the most powerful supra engine in.
